Sam Panopoulos, who has died aged 83, leaves a legacy that has delighted, confused and appalled diners worldwide. Often at the same time.
Panopoulos is the Canadian man who invented Hawaiian pizza, a dish so divisive it led to a presidential outburst this year.
He passed away in hospital suddenly on Thursday.
Panopoulos emigrated to Canada from Greece in 1954 when he was 20, eventually going on to own and operate several successful restaurants with his two brothers.
It was in one of those restaurants in 1962 that Panopoulos was inspired to add canned pineapple to pizza.

It did NOT originate in Hawaii. People keep getting confused by the name.
With this sweet-savory pizza, you either love it or you hate it.
Sam Panopoulos is one of those people who changed our culinary tastes and created a new pizza in the bargain.
This sort of globalism and diversity and multiculturalism is a good thing. Who can be against it?
But in today’s world, “diversity” usually means “get rid of the white folks”.
I like “chicken & pineapple” pizza with lots of green and red peppers.
I hate it. The wife loves it. Thank God for pizzas we can divide in half by toppings.
First time I have seen Chatham mentioned on FR. Congrats.
I love it with the addition of green olives and onions. I never knew it originated in Canada. Thanks Sam!

I have eaten many times at The Satellite in Chatham. I didn’t know it was famous for this.
Cultural appropriation. Greek guy doing an Italian dish using Hawaiian food staples in Canada. Guy is lucky he invented it long ago. Today he would be villainized on Yelp and run out of business.
Greeks make gyros. And run diners.
Napolitanos make Napolitan pizza
Sicilianos make Sicilian Pizza.
All else are variations.
Pineapple Pizza is an abomination as are any of the fast food pizza chains.
NY/NJ is where real pizza is made by hand by Italians. I understand they make some decent variant of Sicilian pizza in Chicago.
As long as it’s not Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, Papa John, or whatever other cardboard crap is in the chains.
Pineapple on pizza is a vile evil monstrosity.
May as well vomit on the pizza and serve it!
God bless him. He made a lot of people happy.

How to break Iceland's spirit
Swedish food is...weird. Bad isn't even the right word. It's just the most bizarre combination of things you can imagine.
Oh, and pineapple on pizza is illegal in Iceland, but that fact isn't even half as weird Swedish food.
Edit: Apparently pineapple pizza isn't illegal, they've just talked about making it illegal. My point about Swedish food still stands though.
Hawaiian Pizza is very good.
Hawaiian pizza is one of my favorites. For one thing, especially with light cheese on a thin crust, it is relatively low calorie.
Same here. Every word.
I didn’t know until this moment that Hawaiian pizza was devisive. But I have always been repelled by it and have more than once said “THAT ain’t pizza!”
Ha! I don’t know about you but I’ll even sacrifice the “neutral zone” slices where the pineapple may have crossed the boundaries. I don’t have a problem with the fruit per se. However, I enjoy it on its own, not as a cooked pizza topping.
