WASHINGTON Vice President Mike Pence's wife, Karen, has installed a beehive on the grounds of their government residence in Washington.
Mrs. Pence says honey bees play an important role in agricultural production in the United States.
She says one out of every three bites of food consumed in the U.S. are made possible with the help of pollinators such as bees, butterflies, birds and bats. But managed bee colonies are in decline, posing a challenge to agricultural production.
The Pence's beehive has 15,000 to 20,000 honey bees, including the queen bee.
Mrs. Pence says honey the bees produce will be given away as gifts.

Get ne of those paper hornet nests, those things are formidable.
Well, how else would her husband get a good night’s sleep?
I would bee on a bee ping list if anyone wants to start one.
Im into my second year. Backyard beek.
Is there much buzz about the meeting.
Only stinging conversation.
Had a bunch of hives years ago, but they slowly died out. Last year I found that a swarm had taken up residence in my old hives in a shed. Moved them outside a month ago. Smoke and getting a feel for your hive’s mood. They have good days and bad days like us. On a good day, you can do pretty much anything you want to. But if they’re in a bad mood (you can kind of tell by the sound the hive makes when you open it up), it’s just better to close it up and work them another day.
They don’t like dark colors, fast movements, and animal smells. If you get stung, and you will, use your hive tool to scape off the stinger rather than pulling the stinger out—that just squeezes more venom in.
LOL. Ya, the drone bees, the males, exist to provide stud service to the queen. Wonder if that offends the sensibilities of feminist types........
Yellow jackets and Japanese hornets.
I received my first bee hive in 1956 from Admiral Byrd.
He taught me all about bees and bee keeping. He would give me $3 any time I spotted a swarm and brought it back to an empty hive.
> I dont like getting stung.
I’ve never been stung.
> Wasps are better but hornets are nastier and will chase for miles, stinging their targets!
Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets store yeast in their guts.
Without them you can’t ferment beer, wine, bread and all other items requiring yeast.
My favorites bees are bumble bees, but bumble bees have nests too small for commercial uses. Their hive is usually 50 to 70 bees and they tunnel out their nest in the ground.
That’s awesome! Imagine how amazing it would be to get a jar of honey from the Vice President!
Good info that I was not aware of before.
Thank you.
It’s been a bad week for the Crunchy Granola Set; they can’t speak out against the things they believe in, too!
*SNORT*
First, Melania says NO GMO foods in the White House, and now Karen has set up bee hives!
I FECKING LOVE THIS!
*FIRST & SECOND LADIES BUMP*
Very fond of bees, myself.
That is beyond cool.
WOW Buffalo Jack, you know your anthophilia!
If she kicks that beehive over she can rid her entire block of everyone! I don’t think a swat team would stick around very long. Hope she puts it up on youtube
Kept bees from when I was 12. Read a book called “ the ABC xyz of beekeeping” fascinating book.
Nope. The kick the males out after they mate with the queen
Don’t eat bananas and start sweating. They don’t like it
