Earth usually experiences higher temperatures during periods of higher sunspot activity. When sunspot activity drops, so does the Earth's temperature. Indeed, we know that during the famous Maunder Minimum from 1645 to 1715, the lack of sunspots caused extremely cold winters in the higher latitudes.
