Retired Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan is facing a not-so-amicable divorce with Clay Pell, her husband of four years.
It even kicked off in probably the most unpleasant way possible as Kwan reportedly learned of her husbands divorce filing in California via a tweet without any prior warning.(snip)
According to Kwan, they last lived together in November, as they were trying to resolve marital issues amicably. However, Pell reportedly blindsided her by filing the divorce in March.
Kwan also said she tried to serve her husband divorce papers 10 times in April but was unsuccessful that she ended up just posting the documents on the front door.
Citing irreconcilable differences as the cause of their separation, Kwan is now looking to have the California case dismissed and have it moved to Rhode Island, where the former couple lived together. Pell has reportedly hired celebrity lawyer Joe Mannis and intends for Kwan to pay his legal fees.
While the couple did not have any children, they purchased a four-bedroom home worth $1.5 million back in 2014.
Neither of the two has actually moved into the 1.9-acre estate yet which is still waiting for a certificate of occupancy. However, Pell, a 35-year-old lawyer, has already placed an air mattress at the residence and suitcases clearly marked Pell.
According to People, Pell made a statement when he filed for divorce in March:
It is with deep regret that I share that Michelle and my marriage is coming to an end, Pell said. This is a sad and difficult turn of events for our family. I love Michelle, and wish her the very best as her life takes her in a new direction.
The couple, who met in April 2011, were married on January 19, 2013, in Providence, Rhode Island.

Oh, true, I didn’t think of that (not experienced in the fine art of divorce!). You’re right...no one has thought a thing of it. I do hear radio ads more and more often around here for divorce attorneys representing men and their interests (the kids, finances, etc.). It’s a good idea...and a shame that these firms have had to be established in the first place.
I maybe could have googled before asking about Pell’s pedigree. Per wiki:
“..... Pell is the grandson of the Senator Claiborne Pell and Nuala Pell (the granddaughter of A&P grocery chain founder George Huntington Hartford).”
So, yeah, old family, old money. He serves as a JAG in the USCG. Interesting career path, given the family history. Maybe it’s a stepping stone for his political career?
Hillary has crazy eyes...
Wow - I was totally infatuated with her. She looks great today.
Its funny that even in FR comments Kristry Yamaguchi still overshadows Michelle Kwan’s performance. Some things never change.
Looks like a ‘gay’.
In November he finally got to see her knees. That did it.
No that’s what she gets for marrying a lawyer. :-)
They have tons of firms for women divorces. Many are women attorneys and that is all they do.
Guys need firms that can help them since verything is so stacked against them.
Yes, Clay is part of the Pell family in RI. He was an aspiring politician and she was the trophy wife. He made a run for Govenor and lost. He said stupid stuff on the trail that showed that he was a dope and then there was this incident were the couple lost their car. Not stolen, the two dopes literally did not remember where they parked their Prius. It was found many days later after a shop owner had it towed. He never recovered from that and never won the Dem nomination for Govenor. RI has had some dope politicians before, and Lincoln Chaffee comes to mind, but this guy was running a few quarts low.
So with now political career, they don’t need to be a couple anymore
Career over marriage. They sometimes don’t work together esp. in my job; although I know some married pilots and a few to flight attendants and some even to first officers and have flown together as crew.
Two reasons to take marriage seriously, but not good excuses to avoid one of God's great provisions for both men and women.
Not an attack, just a minny correction (hopefully to be seen as a light-hearted one).......
I’ve seen too many of my friends who were in my career field get married and dropped out and are miserable (but don’t let on to their SO; but OTOH some have made it work with a career and marriage. I’m not. I enjoy what I do.
