When Gillie Houston first tried the trendy, low-cal ice cream Halo Top, the experience was life-changing.
An entire pint has as little as 240 calories compared to about 1,000 in your average container of Ben & Jerrys and, some say, tastes as good as a non-diet dessert.
I think theres some kind of witchcraft or sorcery involved in the making of it, says Houston, 24, a writer who lives in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and has a food-centric Instagram account, @gilliehouston, with more than 101,000 followers.

I can’t wait until they get the Cherry Vanilla in the 1/2 Gallon again, and their Sugar Free Ice Cream is great also.
A suitable substitute if you really like ice cream but can’t manage the sugars. It lacks the creaminess of real ice cream and feels a little gritty on the tongue but otherwise...
Anything that’s non-fat is loaded with sugar to compensate, whether it’s salad dressing, cheesecake, or whatever.
I’d rather have real ice cream, thanks. Ice cream from PSU creamery or UConn dairy bar are great...
I take the Halo Top and mix it with whipped cream. Gives it a better consistency. Without it, Halo Top’s texture is very grainy.
SHHUSH!
Don’t tell anyone about UCONN dairy bar! It’s a secret!
Try EDDY’s Slow Churn lower FAT and taste like the real thing. No help on the sugar end though. My Fav is just plain old Vanilla goes with anything. If I go full fat it’s Butter-finger flavor or Baby Ruth, Ice Cream Cone is great too. Taste of that old fashioned Drum Stick we ate as kids.
Since sugar is very restrictive in diet, not much Ice Cream gets into the house unless it’s something I don’t like, then hubby can still eat it.
And I boycott B & J.
Shades of Olestra?
No calories, but caused explosive diarrhea...
Never heard of glycerine ice cream. Thanks for the heads up. Do they sell it in NJ?
I miss going there - or Shady Glen, We-Lik-It, Fish Family Farm, Tulmeadow Farms or Dr. Mike’s!
Not much has changed at the places you mentioned.
I’m sure they are all struggling, like the rest if us...hanging on by the skin.....
