FULL TITLE: There's a new sheriff in town! Joe Arpaio's controversial 'Tent City Jail' in the middle of the Arizona desert is taken down by the new top cop who replaced him
Controversial former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's outdoor prison tent complex is starting to be dismantled.
Workers have been seen at the site in recent days, and already one of the five yards within 'Tent City' in Phoenix has been taken down.
Work crews on Wednesday started dismantling the second yard.
Sheriff Paul Penzone, who ousted Arpaio last year and announced plans seven weeks ago to tear down the complex, said the closure of the tents is about improving the county's jails.

Would not surprise me a bit... We actually had a town counsel meeting where they voted on whether or not to become a sanctuary city early this year. Thankfully sanity prevailed for now.
If given a choice the inmates chose the tents. Outside in the fresh air. Little hot in the summer though. If you didn’t time your crime right you suffered.

Crime rate will increase. Taxes to support incarcerating prisoners will increase, due to increased housing & food expenses for the prisoners. Liberalism is a mental disease.
Meh, tent city was overrated. Thanks to the non-durable nature of tents it quickly cost more than actual housing. Should have ended a long time ago.

Tent’s are probably 1/1000 of the cost of the jail. Particularly when you take into account government surplus, FEMA surplus and inmates making tents in prison workshops.
Heard this A.M. that the jails are not overcrowded so there’s no need to keep tent city open. I don’t believe it but I can’t prove it. I loved it when Sheriff Joe said that if it was good enough for our military to live in harsh conditions in Iraq then the prisoners have nothing to complain about. I really miss that guy :(
Actually tents like that are pretty expensive. They didn’t get them from anybody’s surplus. Meanwhile the hot AZ sun eats cloth and rubber and rubberized cloth for lunch. They were spend $4.5 million a year on Tent City. For 24 years.

Tent City was a waste of money that existed only to bolster Arpaio’s ego. The thing was 3/4 empty already. Way past time for it to end. Probably shouldn’t have survived into the 21st century. It was a boondoggle, Arpaio was a boondoggle. Time to move on.
Many here believe Joe was a god. You won’t get through to them. They don’t care that the majority of the inmates in the jail haven’t been convicted of anything and according to the Constitution are still afforded the right of due process. Joe’s antics cost taxpayers a ton of money.
The entertaining part will be when he demands a lot of money to build new “brick” jails. Any criticisms against Joe Arpaio could always be defended that “he saved a LOT of taxpayer money.”
What will the cost be to maintain and operate air conditioning systems for the jail?
