The Unofficial Old and Obsolete American Beer Thread
Free Republic Chat Thread ^ | 5/23/17 | Jack Black

Posted on 05/23/2017 9:22:43 AM PDT by Jack Black

Over on this thread discussing what has become of Fox News ratings the conversation slipped into the famous New Coke fiasco, and then onto discussion of what happened to Schiltz beer.

This seemed like far too important a topic not to have it's own thread. Especially given the onset of summer.

So lets have your opinions, good or bad, on the many regional American macro-brews of days past, both the survivors and the many more dead soldiers.

Pictures are greatly appreciated!

CREAM ALE! Rochester boy here, had my share of those before moving on to Coors (which is spelled ‘Corona’ in Spanish) and later Molson & Labatts (I stood on guard for thee O Canadian beer).

My uncle used to work at the Genny brewery decades ago. He said they had taps available, and workers could just walk up and have a beer. Always thought that was funny, since he operated a fork lift.

Olympia beer - remember “Artesians?”

One of the few lagers I actually like drinking. Haven't seen it on a liquor store shelf in at least 5 years.

Another regional, from Canada but popular in Detroit, sucked up by the One Giant Beer Conglomerate (appropriately trading under the symbol: BUD).

Seems like I bought some Labatt's Blue a couple of years ago:

Lowenbrau was made here in the US by Miller back in the day, as you say.

I liked the special dark. Still look for it on the shelf every once in awhile, but it’s not available in the states anymore. It’s all made in the original Munich brewery now, and you can’t get it in the US.

A discussion about Budweiser?

Not on a beer thread. Buttwidener is not beer. It is a malt beverage brewed with rice.

In my college daze, we would buy a six pack of Heineken, then a case of Falstaff.

Drink the Heineken first, then you didn't care what the Falstaff tasted like, and you could play the Concentration puzzles on the undersides of the caps.

This was a favorite of mine for many years. Especially while watching the Reds play at Old Crosley Field.

I remember the “Treefrog Beer” radio commercials. the first one I heard made me laugh so hard I had to pull over and stop. the were akin to the “Hiney Wine” thing.

Several call outs on Olympia. Here's one can it's shipped in over the years. I *think* they still sell this at the corner store near my house.

The MegaConglomorateDeathStar of American brands lives HERE

The Schmidt big-mouth bottles were “fun” (shaped like little kegs), and enjoyed the beer. Also, Grain Belt! Tasty! :-)

Yup. I was stationed at OTIS AFB (closed) on a radar site back in the 70’s and early 80’s on Cape Cod.

Drank a few of these “Nastygansetts” when I was low on cash.

The Coast Guard took over running the flight line, and their dinky Commissary used to sell it for a dollar a six-pack.

Copperhead is really good. Saw them at the Wild West Brew Fest two weekends ago. They won the festival last year.

I got married at No Label last March. That was fun.

We were introduced to the whole craft beer thang at Southern Star Brewery in Conroe, TX. For the first year or more, their advertising was word of mouth.

Show up at the brewery, purchase a glass for $5bucks and get 3 wood tokens (three pours). Every time you'd return with your glass...they gave you three wooden tokens. Free! This went on for at least a year or more.

It was great. Met lotsa cool folks. Drank lotsa great brew.
Bombshell Blonde and Walloon are my favs.

What, no mention of Billy Beer? Did anyone really drink that stuff?

Back in the 70's I was in Georgia on business. Called on a guy in Americus. He asked if we had ever been to Plains (10 miles away). He took us to Plains. Said he had gone to school and done business with Jimmy. Also said he had respect for the Presidency until Jimmy was elected.

In Plains we stopped in Billy's gas station. His pickup was out front, all painted up and said 'Redneck Power' on the tailgate. We went inside and there were cases upon cases of Billy Beer. Didn't buy, didn't try.
