GREER, S.C. —

A 51-year-old middle school teacher has resigned after being accused of inappropriately touching a student, according to a release from Greer police.

Police arrested Edwin Thomas, of Greenville, on Friday on a charge of third-degree assault and battery.

A police incident report said a Greer Middle School student reported that during the week prior to spring break, Thomas cornered her in a classroom and told her what a great student she was. Other students told Thomas that the girl “needed a hug,” the report says.

I have 2 very young grandchildren in pre-K and 3rd grade. Parents are very involved - thankfully.

I don’t have a solution to the problem you have raised. Seems to me that teachers have good hours and benefits. Maybe pay College professors less and grade school teachers more.

You know what the problem is? The schools are in such back shape they hire anyone they can get. No one wants to do this job.

It's getting pretty miserable. I've been in LAUSD for 13 years now, and every year I am more firmly determined that the minute I turn 55 and can collect the tiniest of pensions, I'm going to bolt. I only hope I can hang in there for 3 more years without getting hurt, in trouble, or having a stroke.

Found this chart of public school salaries - by State. It’s to 2013 - but the salaries seem quite good.

First off I’m not a dude;) I’m a grandmother.

Home schooling is a great solution for some parents, if they have the resources, education and a good social network. Better if mothers could form a small group so that the children would have ‘peers’. School is a great environment for children to learn more than the three R’s.

Yea but also have to figure cost of living too.

Take Alaska, teachers there get 65,468. Do you know how much a Big Mac at Mcdonalds cost there? Last I heard it was like $6.00 now this was in 1994 when in the lower 48 it was $3.00. Can only imagine now what it costs as now that is the price for a Big Mac here.

KC_Lion help me out here please with the cost of living in Alaska, never been there, but know it’s very high. Everything has to be imported in.

Point being the places “paying the most” are the most terrible places that no one wants to live in with a high cost of living.
KC_Lion not saying Alaska is bad, it’s beautiful, just too freaking cold for me and unless you are an Eskimo like my best friend most Americans.

My bad...Dudette.

Schools used to be good, now...

Have some friends who have kids in grade school. Their daughter lost their teacher midway through school. Oh she did not die she was fired for being high on either marijuana or heroin in class. Met her once thought she was a good teacher would have never guessed she was using but then again I don’t use so how would I know? This woman taught 5 grade!

Participating in the PTAs is one way for parents to have input and feedback. Before working fulltime I was very active in the PTA - arranged field trips to the local parks to observe wildlife, birds, mushrooms. That was, of course many years ago. Teacher was great - we all had a good experience.

Teachers not only have to teach and counsel their students, they also have to deal with bossy mothers.

Back in the Sixties, in my High School, in conservative Indiana, a gym teacher (old, bald, doofus-looking) knocked up a 16 year old.

Punishment was: divorce, marriage so the child had a father (word bastard had a meaning - not just any white male), loss of job and license and relocation.

Seemed about right.

I’m so naïve at times.

The high volume of cases like Tad Cummins seems to be a modern day problem. However, there were probably just as many perverts in earlier decades, but today, because it is being reported and not hidden from the public it just seems like a new phenomenon.

I was attending an all-girls school when the first male (science) teacher was added to the faculty. It didn’t take long before he was having an improper relationship with one of my classmates. He was fired. Strange how I had forgotten that.

When I was a freshman at Kent, my band was hired to play a “party” at a school for wayward girls. Whoa! Some of those girls were pretty intense!

Morgana, Yes many things do have to be imported to Alaska. There is at least a 40% increase in fast food prices in Alaska and Hawaii.

While the wage increase can be attributed to a number of things, paying people more to work in remote locations. Then the cost of logistics and sustaining the deployment.

But then you have places like New York City or California in general.

My gosh everything is priced out of this world. But most of that is due the high taxes and regulation which is well known here on F.R.

CNN Money has a pretty good Widget that allows you to compare living costs through out the country. http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/cost-of-living/

Here is another that shows your increase http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx

Your best friend is an Inuit Morgana? That is great :D

The problem with the modern “dispositions” test required by colleges of education today to get a teaching certificate is that it purports to weed out the crazies but is in reality used to screen out conservatives because they officially aren’t supportive/caring/empathetic enough.
