Why are fighter jets scrambled in these circumstances? Are they going to shoot down the plane if they think it will crash into a residential area? I’ve never understood the purpose, if anyone knows.
They play the numbers. You can kill a hundred or so on the plane or risk losing a thousand or more on the ground. It’s cold hearted but the consequences of not acting could be catastrophic.

Before 9/11, I had a passenger who insisted on getting into the cockpit while we were airborn. He was pounding on the cockpit door. I said, “Sit down!”
It took a few times to convince him....but he sat down.
The fighter jet pilots can attempt to peer into the cockpit of the commercial plane and determine visually what's going on (e.g., when there is no radio contact), they can signal to the commercial plane pilot, etc. In short, they can provide considerable assistance.
And they can also, if need be, shoot down the commercial airplane.

Which oughta be every red-blooded American’s impetus to beat the ever-loving bejeezus outta ANYONE who gets mouthy and outta hand on an airline flight. Somebody goes berserk like that it becomes a matter of life-and-death for everyone aboard that they get subdued in short order.
If passengers and flight crew fail to subdue or outright kill an aggressive, hostile passenger, and that nutbar gets into the cockpit, the USAF will take over from there and guaran-damn-tee that entire aircraft goes SPLASH into the broad, blue Pacific, in the greater interest of national security.
I’d assess that your odds of survival are FAR better ganging up with a horde of other passengers and putting the beat-down on the crazy person. The Air Force knows so.

It’s not to protect the residential areas. It’s to protect the globalist’s skyscrapers and the government’s buildings.
