"You gets what you pays for."
Regards,
Pay for the coffin now and collect the life insurance payout when you can.

Not much different than a burial at sea, pardon the reality of it. Will a box make a difference?
Coffins are not a free deal. The family needed to come up with a payment...they didn’t do it. You could go for some cheapo $700 deal and the family wasn’t willing to go and do that. So this was the only way to handle the visitation situation in the end. I’m willing to bet that the flag ‘solution’ has been used in the past.
It looked macabre and like crap. Seems they’d have some kind of throwaway cardboard deal they could dress up a bit instead of that scene.
Funeral homes have display samples/models if they sell coffins so they could a “loaner” available for situations like this.
An accomplished carpenter could have taken 45 minutes and some pine boards (the cheapest around) and made a display unit for $150. The funeral industry wouldn’t be happy over this because there’s no profit.
Years ago, I noted the Amish practice of having a local carpenter just whip out a coffin in a couple of hours for a member of the community who’d passed away in the morning. It’s not rocket science, but simplistic coffins have no profit for the industry.
This is why I have requested I be dumped in a deep forest and be food for nature.
I’m pretty sure that rental coffins are available.
This shame is on the family. They are responsible for this Vet’s burial. No one else.
I’m guessing there are laws against reusable coffins
Cremation use a temporary for viewing and ceremony. I do not know the rate of rental.
And yes there are fancy upscale caskets for sale but the reality is ALL remains decompose and all caskets (expensive or inexpensive) are quite simply, for the living. Just as funerals are.
In the case of a rental coffin (they tend to exist), you pay for the rental fee, and the liner. Someone else can speak toward liner fees, but I’d take a guess that the two fees together would still reach $750 minimum.
I remember when my German father-in-law passed on...the gal pulled out the catalog and I was surprised at the simplicity and cheap level you could go. You could have gone for a cardboard situation, and with no bells and whistles, maybe spent $500. After that, their five-star deal and best situation was around $20,000.
They can give a loaner one for visitation until the money comes in and paid coffin arrives. Happens all the time.
Please they have demos lying around the showroom and if ever sold and used do you really thing the client will complain it was used once for a visitation?
You can rent a casket for the viewing. You can purchase a previously rented casket for the burial, at a reduced price.
The only problem I see with this viewing is that they didn’t wrap a skirt around the gurney to conceal the legs. I don’t see anything disrespectful about it. The infighting among family is disrespectful though.
From the other thread on the same subject:
Under the photo on the article:
This Is What Heritage Funeral Home Did To This United States Veteran. Heritage Was Told By Insurance Company That There Check Would Be There Tomorrow. They Had To Receive The Death Certificate First before Releasing The Check. An They Over Nighted The Checked To Them. But They Still Refused To Allow Him To Be Put In A casket.
Considerably different then a burial at sea!
Sorry but this was disgusting and shameful. Could have been handle a whole lot better then it was.
Rent a coffin. In Mexico they rent a grave.
