The world's oceans close to being starved of oxygen - and even that could lead to mass sea life extinction which could last a million years. University of Exeter scientists fear the modern ocean is 'on the edge of anoxia' - when the oceans are depleted of oxygen. [snip]
Lead researcher PhD student Sarah Baker said it was now 'critical' for modern humans to limit carbon emissions to prevent this.

Not guilty. I’ll learn her anything she needs to know.
Bob, every ocean on the planet is at least 1/3 oxygen.
I think the editors are pretty smart...fourth item will probably be overlooked.
“And while the drop in oxygen comes to a natural end, it isn’t for a million years.”
by then the truth will come out since only 25% of studies are replicated.
Can’t say I’ve ever seen any though.
The carbon cycle is a trajectory in which carbon leaves the water and goes into the air, and then comes back into the water again. It also cycles in and out of plants, animals and the earth itself.
The cycle is very well balanced, and when one part changes other parts compensate. Many other chemicals undergo such cycles.
The multitude of questions regarding ocean temperatures and carbon dioxide levels have been polluted with politics and economic agendas. This includes deliberate omission of facts and outright deception. As a result of this, if you accept what you read in the headlines about climate matters there’s a very good chance you’ve been deceived.
Which force overcomes another force depends on the state of the system at any given time. Of course oxygen diffusion can potentially overcome convection.
If you look carefully at my comments, you’ll recognize no denial of the effects of convection.
Science most complicated when combined with politics, as in the case of “global warming.” So complicated, it’s no longer science but pure politics.
An accurate and effective way to filter out fake news is be prepared to discard articles with obvious scare tactics, like this one. Let’s read the title again:
“Oceans are at the ‘edge’ of losing all oxygen: Event could lead to mass sea life extinction that will last a MILLION years”
I’d love to see that posted to look like a serious proposal on some moonbat lefty site ... as I’d bet you could get many takers (suckers)!
The *experts* don’t know if indeed the oceans are on the *edge* or becoming anaerobic or not and if they indeed are, what caused it.
GUESSING isn’t going to help the problem and trying to fix something that you don’t know why it’s broken, could backfire in a really bad way.
They are only ASSuming that limiting carbon emissions would help. They don’t KNOW.
Yes, you carefully worded your posts and trod gingerly so as to say nothing overtly wrong, but - reading between the lines - I sensed an unwillingness to take a firm stance on the obvious truth.
Some of the posters in this thread were making ridiculous statements (though, admittedly formulated as questions) about "how can the oceans become oxygen-poor and the fish die if each molecule of H2O itself contains oxygen?" That reflects an ignorance of science tantamount to claiming that the Moon and Sun have the same absolute size. Very disappointing!
For the record, although not an oceanologist, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assert that convection (not conduction) is the dominant form of the conveyance of heat from the surface to the floor of the ocean and that convection (not diffusion) is the dominant form of the conveyance of oxygen.
Regards,
I solved this problem and just waiting for Nobel committee to call.
Have every anthropogenic global warming activist get to the closest coast. Start shoveling all that seaweed back into the water. Plants make O2. It’s your only hope.
Convection is a stronger factor only when the temperature gradient is greater relative to the oxygen pressure gradient.
But the most important point about this article is that it’s based on politics, not science.
Be very careful with this.
As the oxygen at deeper levels is depleted, the oxygen pressure gradient becomes stronger and pulls more oxygen molecules into those depths. Thus it’s a self-regulating system and we can see the claim of the article is flawed.
I was wondering why I couldn’t breath underwater. Dang Global Warming!
Earthquakes!! Famine!! Ice Ages!!! Zombie attacks!! Colbert and Marr!!
These idiot libs makee sick
Sheer desperation and it’s showing BIG time!
This article is absolute crap. Today the earth is in a CO2 famine.
It should also be noted that today we are harvesting record amounts of food grains. These abundant harvests are the result of two things, genetically altered seeds and increases in CO2 levels. CO2 is good, it is plant food!!!
