Dog Hailed as Hero After Grizzly Encounter
KFOR ^ | MAY 9, 2017 | NADIA JUDITH ENCHASSI

Momo is a good dog.

Now, we know everyone says that about their pups (and they’re right), but this shepherd-husky-lab mix enters an elite group of really good dogs after saving her friends from a grizzly bear in a Canadian park.

Kenzie Campbell said, on Sunday, he took Momo on a hike at Banff National Park in Alberta with his girlfriend and another friend.

They didn’t get very far on the Cascade Ampitheatre Trail.

“We just made it to the trailhead and walked around a corner, and the bear was maybe 20 feet away,” Campbell said.

They backed slowly out of the woods, but the bear followed and charged.

“At this point, the bear was 15 feet from my girlfriend and the dog was barking and growling, so I let the dog go and she distracted the bear while we ran,” he said.

It took them about a half hour to make it back to the parking lot.

They called 911 on the way, and Parks Canada emergency staff were there when they got there.

They scrambled into a truck, and Campbell shot video of the bear, which had followed them and eventually wandered off.

Bill Hunt, a resource conservation manager with Parks Canada, said the hikers probably startled the bear, which is why it made a little charge. He said seeing the dog probably also upset the critter.

Hunt recommends hikers travel in groups, carry bear spay, make lots of noise and keep their dogs on leashes – or, better yet, leave them at home.

The 6 1/2 year-old female is known as Bear 148 and is very used to people.

“She literally has hundreds and hundreds of encounter with people every summer,” Hunt said.

Since people are much more likely to be attacked by animals then they are by humans, I have started teaching an animal self-defense class. It starts out teaching you how to defend yourself against a charging goose or a yipping Chihuahua. By the time you are a black belt, you should be able to defend yourself against large gorillas or grizzly bears.

I already have 3 people signed up for it!

Animal massage is the next big thing. You should combine animal defense with massage. Get that charging griz calmed down and make him your BFF. You’ll make a killing.

That doesn't sound like it's going to end well. Familiarity breeds contempt when it involves large, dangerous predators and human beings - when the predators realize that the humans are nowhere near capable of either escape or self-defense, and hunger, anger, exasperation or just a bad day makes the predators come after the humans, there's no way the humans are going to win unless heavily armed.

This becomes more and more likely when the bear gets old and is less capable of hunting successfully.

Hunger will drive it to easy prey.
