This was the 10th literary song video I ever made back in 1984. It was part of a set that would be shown in the big auditoriums during Star Trek conventions. As a computer person, this one and New Math were especially favorites.

I’m a rambling wreck from Georgia Tech
And a hell of an engineer!

Landed on Juno beach on D-Day and shot 2 snipers. Was wounded and lost his right middle finger which he would hide during his acting career.

Brilliant! Never heard the song but it’s PERFECT!

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer,
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer,
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,
I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.
Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do.
He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used to do.
Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.
I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.
I’m a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.

It is such fun!

I was shooting a video out at the IBM Research San Jose lab that included scenes of John Backus (Backus-Naur Form, Fortran, reduction languages) that I got by playing 2nd camera and crawling around on the floor shooting up into people’s faces during an actual group meeting. I mentioned my videos and he had me bring in my set and play them for his group. This was in the set, but New Math was his favorite.

Strongest memory was that the video was for a computer project that turned out to do almost nothing when I showed up there with camera crew, so my husband worked on trying to make computer art with their system while I did shots of one sun and one green pine tree, the only thing they had working, in clay. The project leader suggested working on John’s desk since he mostly worked out of his home on Twin Peaks. So we spread out green clay on John’s desk and used a cookie cutter to cut out a tree. And that’s how I learned that oak has a REALLY wide grain. Still remember the guy peeking his head out of his office, running into John’s office and trying to clean the clay out of the oak.

I love videos!

Good heavens. I had some of her cassettes back in the late seventies.

Is Leslie Fish still singing?

Engineer’s Hymn
by Leslie Fish

Oh Lord thou hast made this world
A shadow of a dream,
And taught by time I treat it so,
Except for the ion stream.
From coupler flange to spindel guide,
I see thy hand, Oh God,
Predestination in the stride
Of yon connecting rod.

The Captain rules upon the bridge,
And I reign here below.
He sends his orders down the line,
And I’m pleased to have it so.
For though his words be iron law,
As ancient rules decree,
I know what truly moves this ship
Are my engines, Lord, and me.

I know thy seas are very very wide
And the ship, in truth, is small,
And those who dwell within her hide,
I care for, one and all.
Their safety rests upon my skill,
Their lives are in my hand.
I take it for a sacred trust
And they rarely understand.

Behold these purring engine parts
That keep the ship alive.
I know them down to their atoms parts
So I and mine may thrive.
And fools they be who fail to see
Why I hold my engines dear,
For the engine room is a temple raised
To the God of the engineer!

Thanks so much, Madison. Sometimes my husband regrets getting me into Trek, but he’s a really good vidmaker, too. He did a love song between R2D2 and C3PO that had a crowd hysterical.

That’s a smaller set of my favorites. I thought this one was a little long for that group but it’s great fun - for Uhura, American Pie.

The Engineers song I learned - on the first day at engineering classes - was a bit different and could also classified as a rugby song...:^)

The intro...

An engineer told me before he died
Harum ti**y bum, ti**y bum, ti**y bum
An engineer told me before he died
And I've no reason to believe he lied
....

The rest goes on to describe a contraption he made for his wife out of steel and driven by steam...:^)

Colorado School of Mines Fight Song - “The Mining Engineer”

In 1876 the school passed to the control of the new state of Colorado. It was during this period that our famous song, “The Mining Engineer”, was adapted from the old English drinking song, “The Son of a Gambolier”.

We find the song featured on early programs, and our oldest living graduates testify that they learned it at this time.

Question often arises as to whether our song originated at Mines or at the Georgia School of Technology. Georgia Tech was chartered in 1885, and instruction first began there in 1888. We know that our inspiring song originated on our campus at least ten years before Georgia Tech ever held classes.

Verse 1
I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three hundred pounds,
The college bell to mix it in and clapper to stir it round.
Like every honest fellow, I take my whisky clear,
I’m a rambling wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.

Chorus A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva engineer,
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva engineer,
Like every honest fellow, I take my whisky clear,
I’m a rambling wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.

Verse II

And if I had a daughter, I’d dress her up in green,
I’d send her up to Boulder to Coach the football team,
But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do,
He’d yell “To hell with Boulder,” like his daddy used to do.

Chorus He’d yell “To hell with Boulder,” like his daddy used to do. He’d yell “To hell with Boulder,” like his daddy used to do. But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do, He’d yell “To hell with Boulder,” like his daddy used to do.

Verse III

If you want to gear the planets that revolve around the sun,
We’ll do the job up nicely, and we’ll only call it fun,
And if you want a bridge to Mars, or a ten-foot shaft to hell, We’re the engineers of a thousand years and we’ll do the job right well.

Chorus The engineers of a thousand years and we’ll do the job right well. The engineers of a thousand years and we’ll do the job right well. And if you want a bridge to Mars, or a ten-foot shaft to hell, We’re the engineers of a thousand years and we’ll do the job right well.

Verse IV

Submitted by - Laurence Gardner ‘53
The Miner’s ‘M’, a symbol of a brand of mining men,
Whose courage knocks the mountains down and builds them up again,No matter in this paydirt world orediggers choose to roam,Mines is always with them, The ‘M’ still stands for home.
