TEXAS SENATE VOTES TO ELIMINATE VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTIONS

The Texas Senate has approved a bill that would eliminate the state's mandatory safety inspections for most vehicles.

Texas is one of slightly more than a dozen states that still require safety inspections that test for things like properly-working horns, brakes and brake lights, headlights and seat belts. According to a Senate study, more than 500,000 vehicles didn't pass safety inspection in 2014 and 2015.

Not a big deal.
I’ve been through this in a couple of states.

Just came across this. I'm pretty politically astute when it comes to issues regarding Texas...I have not heard this until now. Damn oh damn...please say I'm not dreaming.

This whole vehicle inspection thing is one huge cluster. Having to inspect a new vehicle or having older vehicles that throw a check engine light for some evap canister or emission sensor is absolutely absurd.

If signed into law, does anyone know when this would go into effect?

For a couple of bucks left on the seat on the drivers side everyone passed.

Damn. No wonder I had problems.

Well, I kind of have mixed feelings about that when I think of some of the junkers that need to be off the roads, but....

Pinging the Texans!

The article indicated the federal government no longer requires it.

Right on baby.

Our laws take effect Sept. 1, unless they want it ended sooner.

Actually Texas has been adding half the cost of the inspection onto the license plate registration, so you've been paying $14.00, but it's still better $35. If you lived in Houston or one of the big cities, it costs #40.00.

Yes, I remember discussing the differences with someone else a while ago. It’s Bi versus Semi.

To solve the issue once and for all I chose to Google it.
Below is the best description I could find. LOL

“Bi-yearly would be every two years. (Think— bisexual isn’t someone who’s attracted to half a gender, its someone who’s attracted to two genders)”

Good for Texas.

Maryland has inspections but it’s insanely stupid.

You get your car inspected once upon purchase. It easily adds $1000 to the price of a used car to fix everything.

When I moved here, the “safety” issues with one of my cars far outweighed the value of the car. I sold it to a friend who lived in free America. He drove it for 3 years.

No further inspections are required. Lots of people drive 20 year old cars with historic plates so they can skip the inspection and emission tests. Yep, a 1985 K car is historic alright.

Plenty of rolling roadblocks. We had one too. Finally got wrecked when my kid got rear ended.

Then feel free to go to your mechanic. No need for government to force you.

It's been 15 years since I've been living in Texas but back then went through the yearly safety check. Got some opinions though.

Regarding the cost, the max $$$ is probably set by the State. Here in GA with our emissions test, I can find places with the fee ranging from $25-14. Competition is great. Does Texas set a fixed $35 fee or what?

I liked having the safety check. When was the last time your headlight aim was checked? The safety check picked this up and fixed the problem on the spot. Ditto with lights and wipers if you forked over the few bucks for parts. If a person has bald tires, get em off the road. I don't want them ramming me in the rain or because of a blowout.

I can see exempting new cars for some number of years for the safety check. For that matter, exempt new cars from emission checks for some number of years (fed regs would probably nix this).

Anyway, while I am not cranky about the safety check, there is room to tweak the details of it to get a positive implementation at lower cost.

*** “when tires were part of the inspection” ***

Back Tires? (for a Rear Wheel Drive)

When I was a youngster my Back tires always had half the tread of the front ... I would replace them about the same time as I replaced my Clutch and Throwout

Aha! So that is why I thought my license cost went up this year! LOL! Dirty pool! :)

I’m glad I don’t live in Houston. I get it done at my dealer. They’ve always been fair with me.

Mississippi stopped requiring them almost 2 years ago - it wasn’t worth it for folks to conduct the inspection and there was a shortage of places to get it done and those folks didn’t take extra time to note much so it was a total waste - the ripoff was charging extra to “evaluate the window tint” instead of just looking at the sticker from the previous year.
