I had a professor this semester who is a community organizer from Chicago (I kid you not). He was utterly worthless, I am one of a number of students who reported him for being worthless, and he hates me (because he always did and) because the administration has evidently cracked down on him.
He holds a chokehold over EVERY student in my discipline, since every student will have to take this ONE professor for one worthless (waste of money), but required course.
What do I do? This is so wrong. So very very heinously wrong. He is so worthless, and so transparently partisan, yet he gets to pick winners and losers, and I am going into debt for this degree!
This is a Republican area. With a Republican alumnus base, and a Republican legislature. I am in absolute despair and am utterly depressed. Please give me advice.
If you can’t take it from someplace else suck it up do the work get a C and move on. It’s good training for adulthood, there will always be some unavoidable jerk in your life. Your first mistake was letting it be known you think he sucks, when you learn to play the jerks right they actually like you. I had one insufferable I was one of the first they told they got another job, because I could be trusted.
It looks like a matter of being wise with what resources you got.
I’d be kind of curious about the circumstances. What kind of schooling is it? What role does this professor’s class play in the schooling (yes, the college requires it, but what’s the actual role)?
Is it possible to finish this up at a different college?
Do you have to actually say what is untrue in order to pass the course? Integrity is sacrificed at a cost.
Just do your best and maintain a low profile.
Don’t piss off people that hold power over you.
Professors like to hear their words repeated by their students. Grade grub. It will be over soon.
Just my 2 cents' worth....
So did you drop the class, did he fail you, or are you still taking it? It’s not real clear where you stand now.
I’ve been reading a lot of sentiments like this on this thread, and yet... integrity can only go so far in accommodating the perverse.
Ms. Adderess didn’t do entirely wrong by raising a flag about it, but it would be wise for her to line up a Plan B.
You just have to play the game, keep your mouth shut, and pass the class. There is NOTHING you can do.
I understand what you are saying. But we are in a new era now with Trump, and this really is intolerable. If this battle cannot be won in a Republican District, where can it be won? Why should we pay good money for this crap?
I had similar situation... Forty years ago
1-transfer always means you will need to take extra classes at your expense to get the degree. Not everything transfers smoothly
2-you complained and they took action. Great you did your part not your problem now.
3-if he has tenure then little Unv. can do. They wave the academic freedom flag in your face
4-ensure that all other students fill out course evals honestly.
5-do not trash him online. That is slander. You could get sued, or worse it paints you as a whiners, gripper, complainer to new employers
6- your objective is to get a degree, graduate and get a job, not to save the world or save all other future students from this hell
7-pay backs are hell and what goes around comes around, so he will get his one day as all of this adds up over time.
This hill is not worth dying on.
Yeah, this does sound a bit vague.
There’s no need for Ms. Adderess to take it personally if it’s a matter of basic integrity. God cares about such things too. Better to skip a school than to try to live up to lies.
That remains to be seen ...
No, I’m in line for at least a B
I think we have an “unequally yoked” problem here. The school is asking Ms. Adderess to buy into lies.
The answer with integrity, though it takes guts and trusting in God to get things right in the bigger picture, is to say nix on that school.
There are a lot of jerks in the world. You have to learn how to deal with them without ticking off half the people you meet.
Also, sometimes students find out their first impression wasn’t completely right.
If you don’t actually have to lie to pass the class, why not go ahead and just say the serenity prayer before each class, if not more.
He’s an S.O.B. but maybe if not such a bad S.O.B. that nothing useful at all comes through, then put up your filters, listen to what’s good, and disdain the rest.
Yeah you are right. But believe me when I say that NOBODY takes this guy if there is any other option.
“So did you drop the class, did he fail you, or are you still taking it? Its not real clear where you stand now.”
English major!
There is a lot of vagueness about the circumstances which makes it harder here.
Do anything you can do with integrity for the jerk and then be on your way ASAP is a good policy.
Picky-ass gatorbreath.
