What I can’t quite understand is the rules of errant application, it seems to crop up most when a given word spelling changes with a plural. Are they being taught this?

Kids these days are lucky to come out of the public schools with even a semi-literate command of their own language. The simple rules of possesive versus plural, are unknown to far too many Gen-Xers and Millenials. Reading comprehension and compositional skills among those groups seem to be at an all time low for the supposedly educated American public.

What's even sadder, is seeing many older people exhibiting the same dismal level of English skills. They grew up in a much better country, and most were taught well in school.

What’s even sadder is the number of “journalists” in the print MSM whose grammar is abysmal.
