James Woolsey: Kim May Have 'More Up His Sleeve' Than Missiles
Newsmax ^ | 29 Apr 2017

Retired CIA Director James Woolsey said Friday that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un "may have more up his sleeve" than firing a nuclear missile at the United States.

"It is a little worse than that," Woolsey, 75, a former Navy undersecretary, told Don Lemon on CNN. "They can launch a satellite into orbit.

"That's actually easier to do than to hit a target on the other side of the Earth.

"If that satellite contains a small nuclear weapon — and it is detonated over some place, say the United States, it can be devastating to the electric grid.

"So, we've got a bigger problem," Woolsey said. "He may be able to detonate something inside a satellite that is in orbit — and that is extremely troubling."

If an EMP attack can devastate the power grid in the entire US and kill 90% of the population within a year, what will it do to neighboring countries?

Three words: Global Economic Collapse.

Assuming a successful EMP attack does exactly the above.

I realize you are passionate but:
Please don’t call fellow FR members lazy or other such names.
We are neither stupid or lazy.

I could think of 10 ways to destroy the USA which don’t involve EMP.
So can our enemies.

Relax, an NK EMP attack is not going to happen.
Now could someone park a sub in San Francisco Bay loaded with a very large Gen 1 thermonuclear warhead...
Probably more likely as it solves lots of technical problems and the Good Guys don’t know who to come looking for later.

Most of this talk is an attempt to get a war started so the RATS have a reason to throw out Trump.

I live in a rural area, I have fuel and a generator set, enough food for a month or so, my own well that I can run with my generator for short periods and a small lake on the place for other water. That’s why I was asking, I’ve thought about things like this before. We could last a month or maybe two, after that it would get pretty “lean”...

He already has two satellites in orbit that pass south-to-north over the US every day.

Gee wonder what President we have to thank for that?

As per Wikipedia, first orbital launch Dec. 12, 2012...

How can we know if Woolsey is trustworthy?

At this point, it doesn’t look good for him.

The 90% estimates are based on the power grid going down completely for a year.

That means, no food or fuel delivery to cities. No clean water, no medicine, no hospitals.

Are you calling BS on the ability of an EMP to destroy the grid or the effects of destroying the grid?

Don’t forget nuclear facilities, hydro-electric dams.

However IMHO, the greatest threat would come from

1. breakdown in society—no police, etc. to maintain law and order. Many have no more than a few days worth of food—they will not be shy about trying to feed themselves, keep warm, etc.

2. Disease from eating tainted food, lack of sanitation options, and lack of hospitals.

IIRC we tested a satellite killing missile launched from a high flying F-15.
We need to take out those satellites pronto. Missile, directed beam laser, mini EMP, rail gun, something.
Do it on the opposite side of Earth from N Korea.

I would be surprised if every satellite in orbit is not already, mapped, identified and targeted for preemptive demolitions on demand by our already extant “multiple assets” that I would assume are in place.

How long the grid would be down depends on how long it would take to make repairs and the availability of spare parts. Some people contend that large transformers are not generally in stock and must be manufactured as needed. I do not know if this is true.

If the grid is destroyed you would have to assume that most cities would quickly descend into anarchy. Would repair crews be able to operate in this environment? Would you be able to find repair crews? Would enough organization exist to muster the crews?

I don’t think the effects of destroying the power grid can be denied. It would be absolutely devastating.

“Kim just has to get “lucky” only once...”

That is a fact that is often overlooked. The results would be devastating.

He is not alone in trying to sound the alarm on this.

1. Dr. Peter Pry points out that protection of our Grid from cyber attack and EMP is in the GOP Platform...

https://www.newsmax.com/PeterPry/emp-thermonuclear-weapon/2016/07/26/id/740578/
From the article:

The Republican platform deserves high praise for promising to protect our nation from the existential threat from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack: “A single nuclear weapon detonated at high altitude over this country would collapse our electrical grid and other critical infrastructures and endanger the lives of millions . . . With North Korea in possession of nuclear missiles and Iran close to having them, EMP is no longer a theoretical concern — it is a real threat.”

Every major U.S. government study agrees an EMP attack would have catastrophic consequences and the nation must be protected. For example, the Congressional EMP Commission, comprising the foremost experts in the Free World, warned in 2004: “Several potential adversaries have or can acquire the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication . . . It has the capability to produce significant damage to critical infrastructure and thus to the very fabric of U.S. society, as well as to the ability of the United States and Western nations to project influence and military power.”

2. Dr. Peter Oberg, a former NASA and US Space Command Official has warned about EMP from Korea in January...
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/expert-north-korea-threatens-emp-nuke-attack-on-us/article/2614739

3. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/02/20/north-koreas-arsenal-raises-the-stakes-for-us-grid-security-experts.html”The technology of building a super EMP weapon is understood and at least by circumstantial evidence…the North Koreans know how to do it,” said Henry (Hank) Cooper, a director at the think tank Foundation for Resilient Societies and a former arms control official under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

4. BTW, NORAD has moved underground in an effort to harden. Why would they if it is just BS?

5. Newt Ginrich and Ted Koppel(wrote book) have spoken extensively about this.

So it is not just Woolsey or Forstchen that are sounding the alarm...

I think if we discount an EMP or cyber attack on the grid as BS, we do so at our peril. I hope President Trump, who has stated the need to harden and secure the grid, will insist some of this be included in any infrastructure bill he signs.

“Long Game” = the (dead) man who destroyed America, i.e., eternal infamy. I really fear that is all he wants.
