Retired CIA Director James Woolsey said Friday that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un "may have more up his sleeve" than firing a nuclear missile at the United States.
"It is a little worse than that," Woolsey, 75, a former Navy undersecretary, told Don Lemon on CNN. "They can launch a satellite into orbit.
"That's actually easier to do than to hit a target on the other side of the Earth.
"If that satellite contains a small nuclear weapon and it is detonated over some place, say the United States, it can be devastating to the electric grid.
"So, we've got a bigger problem," Woolsey said. "He may be able to detonate something inside a satellite that is in orbit and that is extremely troubling."

Best case scenario is a coup d’etat by someone who would like his country to join the human race. Then, eventually North and South Korea would rejoin into what I think could be a very viable economy for all of its citizens.
Utter nonsense. This so-called EMP threat is a bunch of hysterical horsesh1t and I wish people would stop repeating it.
Imagine the electronics in your car are fried and the car will not start. Even if the car runs, where are you going to buy gas?
Imagine the transformers at all the power stations in your region fried and it will take months are years to get any replacements.
Imagine the switch gear is fried and even if the power plants could be run, the power grid could not be managed.
Imagine no power in your house. Imagine no power for pumps to supply water to your house or pump/process sewage.
Imagine no electronics for money management.
Imagine no food in any grocery store anywhere in your town.
Imagine the food stamp crowd getting hungry and gangs attack neighborhoods looking for something to eat. What are you going to do when you hear noises outside in the middle of the night?
Etc. Getting things fixed is not going to be your primary focus. Surviving for the first few weeks will be. There will be people out there who will kill you for what they need to survive.
Why didn't this happen with Starfish Prime?
DPRK has not demonstrated the ability to create yields >10kT, never mind >1mT.
This EMP hysteria is absurd.
Nonsense.

Look at the bright side, an EMP would deprive the hordes from the city of any transportation. They have on average 3 days of food and a power dependant water supply. In 30 days liberals would be an endangered species. Try a scenario with that kind of potential and that book “One Second After” falls apart.
A Red Rose...
How Romantic!
” there are simply no good options that I can see.”
First strike in evening to take advantage of the US/ROK night fighting advantage. ~1000 or more simultaneous air hits, targeting air defense, comms, major bridges, MiGs, known ballistic and nuclear targets, degrading CBW delivery, and submarines in port. Optional decapitation strike attempt. Simultaneous opening of fire across the DMZ at all known targets. Counter-battery radar to find unknown targets. Rapid advance 5-10 miles across the DMZ in most places, 10-30 miles in the west (near Seoul), putting the long-range artillery (400-500 pieces) out of range of Seoul (all of their other hardware is already out of range), and cutting them off of their tunnels. Three layers of BMD (Aegis, THAAD, Patriot) to block ballistic threats. Followup air power first focusing on residual air defense / aircraft, CBW denial, port facilities, and mopping up ballistic threats as they appear (most DPRK missiles are liquid fueled - each missile battalion takes hours to prep each missile, sequentially, and is highly vulnerable during that time) - then steadily switching to a support role to the troops defending the newly established buffer past the DMZ. Three carrier groups plus the ROK navy take care of submarine sweeps and eliminating the surface threats.
DPRK hardware is abundant but horribly obsolete; a lot of it can’t even move. Their ammunition is unreliable, most of their targeting systems highly primitive, and nothing does anything to have reduced radar signatures. Their fortifications are nothing for modern penetrators to deal with.
Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Honolulu are not losses. Why would Fat Un do us any favors?
Just destroy whatever grid they have and send them back to the stone age. Most of their country is already there.
With an EMP weapon, you dont need the sophisticated targeting or re-entry technology. You set the weapon off in space. There are estimates that up to 90% of the US population could die in a year. That is FAR more than a single H-Bomb hitting a single US city.

Ok, a question. I’m asking because I really don’t know the answer. If an EMP attack can devastate the power grid in the entire US and kill 90% of the population within a year, what will it do to neighboring countries? I know the effects of any attack won’t just automatically stop at the US border. What will it to Canada, Mexico and maybe other countries? This is sort of like a biologic attack, the germs don’t give a crap about borders. Now, wouldn’t much of the entire world be wanting FatBoy’s head? He has to realize the repercussions of any such “high tech” attack. Also there would be refugees out the yin and the yang, and they are going SOMEWHERE. This disaster would not be confined merely to the US.
Read the book discussed in this wiki article. There is also a sequel (like One Year After). Accurately depicts what an EMP would do to us. All of the ramifications. Our government has done little to harden the grid or guard against EMP attack.

Kim had better hope he gets all the Boomer Submarines too. Hint, he won't.
Wouldn't it require a pretty big bomb to disable the entire US power grid?
Read the book referenced in post below yours. As to Fat Boy surviving? As we have seen by now there are many whose goal is to bring down Western Civilization with no expectation of their own survival. Like the Muslim suicide bombers.
Woolsey is way out of his league here.
In order to launch a nuclear warhead into orbit, you need a lifting body which won’t blow up on the pad and kill everyone within a 5 mile area.
Second, it needs a big enough warhead to generate an EMP. Currently WAY beyond NK abilities.
Third, and there is no way around this...you need to do it without the world finding out who did it.
One EMP nuc only will mean you have made enemies with the entire world.
The CrazyFatGuy isn’t smart enough to pull this off without ending his future as a dictator.
Yep, pure BS
I cannot debate our military capabilities or strategy because I know about zero on that front. I just think about these things in terms of human cost/loss of life.
I worry about our guys having personally seen some come home with terrible injuries and they'll never be the same.
If we can literally "knock them out hard" very quickly with minimum loss to our side then who am I to say "no" or protest? The threat from North Korea IMO is about as real as it gets. I used to think so much of it was just bluster but now that we see China getting involved and directly threatened from North Korea my opinion changed.
If we're gonna go after North Korea, let's go with everything we have and take them out quickly. On a side note, the message that would send to those who insist on threatening us (ISIS, radical islam (all of islam..) and others) would be pretty damn' convincing to not mess with us.
I don't remember who said it but the quote was along the lines of "nothing guarantees a lasting peace more than a clear, decisive and convincing military victory."
Hiroshima and Nagasaki proved that.
What if he doesn't care about his future as a dictator?
What if he just wants to blow up the world and go out in a blaze of glory?
There are people like that .......
