SAN MATEO A woman woke up to a mountain lion snatching her dog off of her bed at a Pescadero home early Monday morning, according to deputies.
At around 3 a.m., a woman called 911 reporting that her dog was taken by a mountain lion from her home in the area of 800 Native Sons Road.
The woman told deputies she and a child were sleeping in a bedroom with their 15-pound Portuguese Podengo at the foot of the bed.

The animal took the small dog from the bed and walked out, she told deputies.
The woman then went outside with a flashlight to look for her dog. She saw large wet paw prints at the entrance to the bedroom and called 911.
Deputies searched the area and also found paw prints similar to a mountain lion.

“Anyone who thinks loss of a pet is a joke needs to ESAD.”
Couldn’t agree more. This is a horrible story with a tragic ending.
My pets are family.
Good for her! Nice to hear about someone actually fighting to save their dog.
I spent a lot of time in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks last summer. Rangers went on and on about bear spray and don't shoot the bears. (I agree, a normal handgun is a waste on a grizzly, better to stand your ground and if that bluff doesn't work, then fall and cover.....).
But as soon as I got to Yoesemite NP, first thing I heard is that bear spray is illegal in Kalifornia. I believe they said it would be considered a concealed weapon. There were postings in other NPs that mentioned using bear spray on other animals such as cougars as I recall.
There is no reciprocity for CWP with my state, although I understand Kalifornia does allow CWP.
My lapdog will not be hitting any trails out here.
S.S.S. Shoot, shovel, shut up.
Lot of red and grey fox ...and coyotes... in Florida. They like to snatch kitties and kitties tend to hang out in the same places fox do. Horned owls take cats let out at night too. Dogs tend to go in areas where the gators are as they are attracted to water.
Someone should introduce this woman to door locks.

I wonder it the lion spotted the dog outdoors and followed it in?
As noted above, they left the bedroom French doors open so the dog could go out. My guess is the lion probably spotted the dog outside, and followed it back into the house.
.
Pescadero? Land of idiots!
She probably voted to protect the predator that took her dog.
Protecting predators is insane.

Oh no, her $hita$$ neighbors would likely have ratted her out.

Maybe your Mossberg might like to breed with my Dickenson?

An excellent choice would be a walking stick with a stun gun carried by Bass Pro. However, since it is California, may not be allowed :(
Most fatal attacks by North American black bears during the past century were conducted by lone, male animals that stalked and then killed their human victims as prey.
A mountain lion entered a Chaffee County home, killing a dog and briefly trapping a mother and her two children inside the house.
The incident began just after 4 p.m. when the lion chased a small dog through a pet door into the home, about nine miles northwest of Salida.
Michelle Bese and two children, ages two and five, were in the house when the lion entered.
Chaffee County sheriff’s deputies helped the woman and her children escape through a bedroom window. They also opened the home’s front and rear doors, hoping the lion would leave on its own.

A brave pet cat has shown it has no fear while facing off with a mountain lion that was trying to get into its Kentucky home.
The cat did not flinch as the wild animal pawed at the sliding door attempting to open it.
A mountain lion crept through an open door into a house outside Denver, snatched a Labrador retriever from a bedroom where two people were sleeping and left the dog’s dead body outside.
Jacquie Anderson said they were awakened by a commotion in the room at around 4:30 a.m. and, when she got up to check what was happening, she realized the big cat was in the bedroom. She exclaimed that there was a mountain lion in the room and she believes that led it to run out the open doors with Scout in its mouth. The dog weighed 72 pounds.
