In Indonesia, 212 is the number used to denote a specific mass protest from 2nd December last year. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims marched against the Christian governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, known as Ahok, over allegations of blasphemy regarding his use of the Quran in campaigning against opponents. The march was organised, in part, with the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Councils Fatwa. It was pretty hardline conservative and the protest demanded the government prosecute and jail Ahok based on the councils fatwa, declaring him to be a blasphemer.

I thought Moslems were not supposed to depict living objects.
How can this guy be a devout Muslim? Wouldn’t drawing this comic be against Islam? It would be consiconsidered idolatry.
Quran surah 5:51
O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.
I think that, according to Muslims, they can do pretty much whatever they want, and it’s the rest of us who are supposed to tip-toe meekly around.
So I guess Marvel Girl and Cyclops aren’t bangin’ anymore!? (Sorry, a little REAL X-Men early sixties action there!)
Earlier today, in a heavily researched article, Bleeding Cool ran the news that X-Men artist Ardian Syaf had inserted religious and political messages in the artwork to X-Men Gold #1 that have been interpreted as, in relation to the Indonesian political scene as anti-Christian and anti-Jewish. I have spoken to Syaf but he has not been willing to comment on the matter.
Marvel Comics did not respond directly to Bleeding Cool’s inquiries earlier today, but we have received their response indirectly. They state,
The mentioned artwork in X-Men Gold #1 was inserted without knowledge behind its reported meanings. These implied references do not reflect the views of the writer, editors or anyone else at Marvel and are in direct opposition of the inclusiveness of Marvel Comics and what the X-Men have stood for since their creation. This artwork will be removed from subsequent printings, digital versions, and trade paperbacks and disciplinary action is being taken.
It has been noted that this does not include any apology. As to what may happen with Syaf, there are no details. We will keep an eye on any developments.
I have to believe that someone in the higher echelons at the House of Mouse is going to take notice of all the bad press Marvel Comics has had of late. They’ve pretty much admitted their sales suck and that no one wants their “preachy pukey social justice” line of comics.
Not that I’d pay $3.99 for any newly produced comic book.
I picture a certain Mr. McDuck looking over the bottom line, his brow furrowing in anger and telling Miss Quackfaster to get the show-runners at Marvel Comics to report to his office right away...
Bloody disgusting. Please mate, tell Me it’s a “joke” comicpage!
” It was pretty hardline conservative “
It was pretty hardline Islamist.
I don’t accept the concept that there are “conservative Communists” by being hardline Communists.
Would liberal reforms in Communism be open to private property rights?
Are they outsourcing their comic book art to Indonesia now?
Iceman’s a poofter now. I have some of those early X-Men comics. He was into girls back then.
Those are very tight pencil “roughs” leaving nothing for the inker to do but trace the lines.
And yet the anatomy of that arm swinging the bat looks ‘off’.
Retrocommunists have been changing the histories of a number of Marvel characters. Didn’t they also make Rawhide Kid homo now?
And one of the characters in Alpha Flight was light in the loafers (easier to fly).
Wow...so this is the junk that’s passing for comic book “art” these days? What a complete lack of understanding of human anatomy. The only way it could be worse is if his nose were positioned on his throat.
$3.99 for a Marvel Comic Book! Holy Cow! Did I read that right? I think the last one I bought was 10 cents! It was a long time ago...
One of the cops in the street scene in #9 has the same arm.
You are right. The arm looks like it’s been dislocated at the elbow.
