Earlier today, in a heavily researched article, Bleeding Cool ran the news that X-Men artist Ardian Syaf had inserted religious and political messages in the artwork to X-Men Gold #1 that have been interpreted as, in relation to the Indonesian political scene as anti-Christian and anti-Jewish. I have spoken to Syaf but he has not been willing to comment on the matter.
Marvel Comics did not respond directly to Bleeding Cool’s inquiries earlier today, but we have received their response indirectly. They state,
The mentioned artwork in X-Men Gold #1 was inserted without knowledge behind its reported meanings. These implied references do not reflect the views of the writer, editors or anyone else at Marvel and are in direct opposition of the inclusiveness of Marvel Comics and what the X-Men have stood for since their creation. This artwork will be removed from subsequent printings, digital versions, and trade paperbacks and disciplinary action is being taken.
It has been noted that this does not include any apology. As to what may happen with Syaf, there are no details. We will keep an eye on any developments.
I have to believe that someone in the higher echelons at the House of Mouse is going to take notice of all the bad press Marvel Comics has had of late. They’ve pretty much admitted their sales suck and that no one wants their “preachy pukey social justice” line of comics.
Not that I’d pay $3.99 for any newly produced comic book.
I picture a certain Mr. McDuck looking over the bottom line, his brow furrowing in anger and telling Miss Quackfaster to get the show-runners at Marvel Comics to report to his office right away...
Those are very tight pencil “roughs” leaving nothing for the inker to do but trace the lines.
And yet the anatomy of that arm swinging the bat looks ‘off’.
