This seems to be a perennial argument in the food service industry but it never fails to attract my interest. The Washington Post picked up the story of an an upscale Italian restaurant in North Carolina called Carusos. They had run into a number of issues with parents bringing young and too often horribly behaved children into the eatery for dinner who then wound up annoying the rest of the clientele. As they tell the story, the straw which broke the camels back was a young girl with an i-Pad who was playing videos at full volume despite being asked to turn it down (or off) and the parents were completely failing to discipline her or resolve the situation. Shortly after that they imposed a ban on bringing children under the age of five into the establishment.
The typical howls of outrage from some parents began immediately, but there was another reaction as well.
The ban conceived by the restaurants owner, Pasquale Caruso has led to a dramatic increase in reservations, said Nunez, who said Carusos has seen a spike in diners, from about 50 per day to around 80.
Banning children has always been a topic in the industry and every owner says, I wish I could do it, he said. Our owner has the full support of the staff. We work here to make a living, too, and we support our owner 100 percent.
Good for them. Too often you see only one side of this debate in the press and it centers on the parents who are complaining and saying that families are being stigmatized or punished or what have you.

Children, but not brats.
The problem isn’t the children it’s parents who choose not to control them. My son works in Management in ‘High End establishments......generally speaking people who go there don’t bring unruly children... but he has also worked at Mid End establishments and often says the parents have no concern for others comfort while eating.....even when they approached about the matter.
Bad attitudes of parents today hurts everyone but they have little if any concern of that.
LOLOL...good show there!...exactly the way to handle!
.....”Ive seen this kind of behavior at all kinds of stores and restaurants. This spoils things for people with well behaved kids.”.....
Of course....but then there are far fewer well behaved “parents” then there use to be.....the apple thingy.
...”And here come the child haters”....
Oh Ive read many of the posts and couldn’t agree with you. Has nothing to do with dislike of children....it does with inconsiderate parents who don’t have the sense to remove their child until hes under control....or even caring enough to do so.
Selfish generation of parents who think the world revolves around them and their children.....it doesn’t.
Oh the horror! Children of the poors not on a leash! If they cannot afford to ship off their children to boarding school why don’t the bond them to a mine or a rug-factory?
People who hate kids are sucky people who should stay home.
I am not defensive, I am actually on the offense calling out jerks who reflexively hate kids. If a restaurant caters to children then people who do not like children should not go there. A family with kids drops a lot more money at a restaurant than two inflexible, snobby prunes on a date.
FYI my children were always well behaved in restaurants and the few time they were not, I removed them and showed them how displeased I was. Perhaps you raised your children wrong.
so now you think i don’t know how to raise my kids, because I agree that a restaurant should be able to ban anyone they feel like banning?
I am not anything you said I was, and in fact, you do not know me at all. How about we agree to dis agree on this, and I will add you to my list of folks that I will not engage with.
have a great rest of your weekend. and please do not respond to me anymore. Ever. Thank you.
I say they are behaving like brats. . . threatening to hold their breaths, having tantrums, and screaming and breaking things if they don't get their way. Brats. . .
In retrospect, it may not have been the appropriate thing to do on my part. But this was a classy restaurant and none of the wait staff were willing to say anything, and the other patrons were just sitting there trying to enjoy their meals while these hellions were running around.
I'm normally a non confrontational individual until I get really upset then I lose it and explode, which is what happened here.......and I still feel embarrassed about it.
With that being said, why did it take me to finally stand up, why didn't anyone else voice their complaint before me? I guess there's a lot to be said about being a member of the silent majority but remaining quiet.
I stood up once in a packed Church to speak out, and there's was no way I wanted to do so either, but when God moves he moves the willing and often those who would hesitate. The end result was a lot of handshakes from the congregation who had been praying for such to happen....though the Pastor wasn't exactly a happy man....but then he was the target. So.....
The better thing to say is why didn't anybody 'stop' you or I?.........never underestimate how God moves or whom he moves among the wiles and ways of men..at just the right time.
Thank you
You’re welcome...now you can remind me when I forget that great truth!
