Hungary said it will not withdraw new legislation to regulate foreign universities that a Budapest college founded by American financier and philanthropist George Soros says could force it out of the country.

Central European University (CEU) said on Wednesday that the bill proposed this week was unacceptable and that it threatened academic freedom in Hungary, whose Prime Minister Viktor Orban has clashed with Soros-funded organizations.

CEU rector Michael Ignatieff met with Education Secretary Laszlo Palkovics late on Wednesday and told him the university demanded the bill be withdrawn and that rules ensuring foreign universities can operate freely are put in place.

The government said it was open to negotiations but would not withdraw the bill. …

Thank you!

As you can see, I am proud of my Hungarian heritage, but was raised to be a VERY PROUD, PATRIOTIC American; no hyphens for me, nor my family, who have been American for many, many, many generations.

And Hungarian pastry/deserts are THE best in the entire world. :-)

Awe, thanks. Methinks I can call you ZsaZsa now. I suppose I mustn’t be too frisky detailing the limits of my knowledge of all things Hungarian!

The KGB, or whatever it’s called now, doesn’t seem to have any problem getting rid of people who displease them. What do you suppose is restraining them from getting rid of Soros?

LOL...if you must, but Ava was the best of the lot. :-)

Actually, there were/are a lot of famous and not famous at all Hungarians/Americans with Hungarian ancestry, who have lived/live in American and made their adopted nation better.

Leo Szillard, who was part of inventing "THE BOMB" that ended WW II, was the uncle of a woman my grandmother was friends with and I played with her sons, when I was very little. Yes, I knew and met the great man, when he visited his family, but at that age, he was just another adult to me.

Many old films stars, directors, and owners of movie studios were Hungarian immigrants or of Hungarian descent. But most people have very little knowledge of Hungary and couldn't pick someone out of a lineup, who they thought looked Hungarian, if their lives depended on it. Well, perhaps the Gabor girls, but that's about it. LOL

Are you sure the paprika and crescent cookie weren’t stolen from slaves? Muslims are notorious for stealing ideas from their slaves and passing them off as their own.

Are you now suggest that croissants were invented by the Muslims or their slaves?

Many nations invented crescent shaped cookies in honor and thanksgiving, of getting rid of the damned Muslim invaders!

And HELL YES, the Ottoman brought the pepper that paprika is made of, into Hungary; they were NOT native plants of that region. OTOH, because of the soil and climate, the Hungarian pepper were unique to Hungary and they made paprika ( which I bet you don't pronounce correctly ) from them. It was the ONLY good thing that the damned Muslims ever did, for Hungary!

Just out of curiosity....how much Hungarian history do YOU know, without looking it up?

I know zero Hungarian history.

I was trying to say that anything muslims take credit for inventing or discovering was most likely invented or discovered by their slaves.

Not sure what you’re upset about.

Ok, ai think I get it now. Maybe. Were you reading my post as suggesting the Hungarians didn’t invent something?

My post was meant as a slam against muslims, not Hungarians.

I do agree with you that Eva was the best of the lot, but it was ZsaZsa who had the fun name. ZsaZsa. What fun. Magda was the third sister, I remember. They were a story, for sure. Gabor, I wonder if that was their true name. It was a different but pretty name, given the girls were beautiful, it rolled off the tongue like a lyric.

I read a long story on them last year and enjoyed it so much.

Okay...you didn't manage to write it, that clearly and FYI...the Hungarians we CONQUERED, but NOT enslaved!

I am of Hungarian descent, know a lot of that nation's history, and also even MORE about it's foodstuffs, recipes, the people whose last names are attached to Hungarian dishes, and the fact that the great French chef, Escoffier has an Hungarian second in command, from whom he stole and took credit for certain Hungarian dishes, which are now claimed to be French. ;^)

When we first went to Maxim's for dinner, we were offered a "speciality of the house". When the potato dish arrived, I was hard put to control my almost hysterical laughter. WHY? Because this supposed, grand speciality, was nothing more than what my family and I had/have been making for 1oos and woos and 1oos of years and what we've always called "GERMAN FRIED POTATOES". We've always considered it to be "PEASANT FOOD" ( which isn't an insulting term ), we all LOVE it, and not only is it 100% HUNGARIAN ( and why we call it that is beyond me )and mine is better than what I was served at maxim's. :-)

If you're interested, though it's probably out of print, I'll gladly give you the title and author of a book all about the history and uses of paprika.

ZsaZsa's REAL, given first name, was SHARI; a VERY common Hungarian first name for girls. ZsaZsa was her family nickname, taken from one of her sister's mispronunciation, when a toddler, of Shari.

Gabor is also a common last name in Hungary.

In Hungary, a person's last name comes first and his or her first name, last, when written. I also don't know WHY that is, but it is. LOL

Magda married well, as did all of them, including Mama, and they kept doing it...getting married! ;^)

We LOVE GREENACRES, in this house. Eva at her best!

I would be interested in learning more about the history of Hungary. I’m very impressed with President Orban.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, it seems as if the Eastern European countries are familiar enough with tyranny that they are rejecting leftists and embracing more conservative governments.

I bet within 5 years Eastern Europe, Hungary included, will be INVITING the Russians back in, but this time as allies against a Western Europe that is trying to flood them with Moslems. And not long after that, the quickly-declining native Western Europeans (French, Germans, Italians, etc.) will also want Russian help in yet another push-back against their ‘friends’ from the Middle East.

Things will be bloody, Europe has all but assured that much.

Sadly, that’s true. Hungarian history is filled with stories of resistance against invaders. Take 1956 as just one example. But to pick an Hungarian out of a lineup, that’s easy. Just pick the best-looking person. (My grandparents were Hungarian, so maybe I’m a little bit biased here!)

Oh yes, from small skirmishes with the ancient Roman army, to Attila the Hun ( who, unlike most of its conquerors, stayed, his troop stayed too and intermarried, with the populace and actually became "HUNGARIAN"! :-)

The '56 Revolution was a heart breaker! I was just a kid, but I cried, as I watched the News about it, on the news.

Many Hungarians and those of Hungarian descent, are, indeed, beautiful/pretty/handsome peoples. OTOH, every ethnicity also has their "uglies". ;^)

Hungarian women ARE and have ALWAYS been known, world wide, for their beautiful skin!

My maternal side, is pure, unadulterated Hungarian ( as far as one can go)/of Hungarian descent, until my mother married my father, who was only 1/2 Hungarian and 1/2 German.

LOL...I'm a tad biased as well, but the fact is, yes, the Magyars, as a whole, were and have always been a handsome lot and I'm certain that you and your family members hew to that generalization.

I very much doubt that the Hungarians, or Poland, etc. will be calling on Russian for anything at all! They have very long memories, hold on to the ancient "BLOOD HATRED" of those who once victimized/conquered them! That DOES get handed down, for many, many, MANY generations; even here, in America, even when the family has been PROUD AMERICANS for almost 2 centuries. Just ask any Freeper, of Hungarian heritage. :-)

They'll reach out to President Trump; should they need help!

A lot of my knowledge comes from family stories, their knowledge of history ( world, ancient, modern, and lots in between )and books....lots and lots and LOTS of books, many probably long out of print.

Starting at the present and moving backwards, the Cliff's Notes are thus: For what is now, but always wasn't, the smallish sized country, Hungary, has been invade, taken over, ruled and then the invaders overthrown at long last, for millennia.

With the fall of and disruption of the USSR, Hungary finally, once again, got her freedom. The early years weren't much better, because of the extant Commies who managed to win the elections. But Orban is a pretty good guy/leader.

There was the Hungarian Revolution, in 1956, when the valiant Magyars attempted to overthrow the stinking USSR stronghold over them and sadly failed.

Hitler invaded and took over and the Hungarians were, once again, stuck in the middle of another WORLD WAR, persecuted, and many killed in that war or in the concentration camps ( thanks to that POS Soros and others ), with swaths of the population dispersed.

Between the World Wars, Hungary had had pieces of it chopped off and either pieces made into separate nations, or given to others, because of the stinking French, the lousy English PM, and that F'in' MORON, Woodrow Wilson. Also due to the Treaty Of Versailles, they were sunk into a morass of penury, because of the dreadful war reparations.

WW I was caused by the assassination of the Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand and his Morganatic wife. He was Emperor's Franz Joseph's nephew, and came to be the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, due to the suicide of the Criwn Prince Rudolf.

The Hapsburgs take over, after many centuries of the Hungarians battling the damned Ottoman Turkish invasions, take overs, being finally kicked out, spin, repeat.

And please DO look up Petofi and Kossusth!

The Wiki history of Hungary isn't bad, but won't give you all of the "juicy" details that you'll read in books. OTOH...you'll learn some startling and very inertesting facts. :-)

My dream since President Trump’s election would be for the US to honor Russia’s warrant for Soros. Wouldn’t be surprised if that thought isn’t behind the left’s sudden embrace of the “Russians Stole our election for Trump” meme. We wouldn’t have heard the first word about Russia had Hillary won the election.
