All lanes on I-85 are blocked due to heavy black smoke from a massive fire, officials said.

The I-85 section is an elevated section and the fire appears to be something burning beneath that elevated section. In another clip you can see small drums not very far away from the camera, under the elevated roadway.
Question for Atlanta officials is how and why are flammable materials even allowed to be store under the roadway.
It happened last year in NYC with an elevated track section on a major train line going in and out of Grand Central Station in New York - same thing, flammable materials stored under the elevated tracks caught fire.
Yep I have experienced it first hand and my first thought when reading this is that this being Atlanta and an unprecedented road collapse on 1-85 it will probably screw up traffic so bad that my planned trip to the liquor store tomorrow here in Jackson County Ohio will need to be canceled.
The City of Atlanta proper is about 10% of the metro area population. Plenty of Republicans elsewhere in the metro area, running things.
When I went in there to look at what was going on, I could tell it was catastrophic. I told my wife the road would cave in. Then at one point, I saw the concrete edge of the road explode and spread into the other roadway. A few minutes later the whole section collapsed.
The WSB News Chopper 2 shot zoomed out to show the MARTA maintenance yard right next to the fire and my next thought was that it may have had something to do with the immediate cause. But, in such close proximity to the Highway, It could have been a cigarette that started a blaze in trash that had collected out of sight, which then ignited the PVC pipe or fiber optic interduct that was stored there.

Is that Dick Cheney in the picture? He was in New Orleans when Katrina hit you know. /sarc.
Funny you should say that. I got stuck in traffic on I-75 South for a job interview in downtown Atlanta after I separated from the USAF. That was over 35 years ago. We moved to the north side in Marietta and I drove down I-75 south for a few decades.
The feeling I got getting off of the midnight shift at Number One Peachtree Street (ITT) and then Number Two Peachtree Street (Sprint and MCI) was more exhilarating than I could ever describe. Resurgens Atlanta!
Soo it collapsed. I did not think concrete/steel could burn?

Intense fire can easily weaken tempered steel and crumble concrete. A structure under high stress, so weakened, will not last long.
Plastic burns... and quite hot, too.
I an older than I care to remember. There is plastic (milk jugs & remember the old Vac-U-Form toy? It was one of my favorite Christmas toys from Santa back in the day). And there is PLASTIC which is used in many heavy duty production of things such as plumbing, construction, faux wood flooring, laminated tiling, siding to name a few with a good dose of chemical which are toxic when released into atmosphere.
Hate getting old.
Fire caused concrete to spall, allowing fire to reach the embedded steel?
“Thats going to be horrible for MONTHS.”
A team of Seabees could have this thing fixed in 24 hours.
The economic damage will be huge. NE suburb commuters face horrific traffic. Many might sell-out of homes. Crashing region home prices.
Three guys arrested. After water-boarding they might disclose their motive. Terrorism should NOT be ruled out.
