America's public education system is failing the citizens of Detroit, where the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund reports that 47% of people in Detroit are illiterate. In nearby suburbs, up to one-third are functionally illiterate.
The report, titled "Addressing Detroit's Basic Skills Crisis" makes the problem seem as intractible as the Flint water crisis that is about to hit its third anniversary.
Director Karen Tyler-Ruiz described that level of illiteracy to WWJ: "Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; whats on the bottle, how many you should take just your basic everyday tasks."
Various estimates of the scale of need for basic skills services in the region convey a crisis-level order of magnitude. The National Institute for Literacy estimates that 47% of adults (more than 200,000 individuals) in the City of Detroit are functionally illiterate, referring to the inability of an individual to use reading, speaking, writing, and computational skills in everyday life situations. We also know that of the 200,000 adults who are functionally illiterate, approximately half have a high school diploma or GED, so this issue cannot be solely addressed by a focus on adult high-school completion.
The remaining 100,000 of these functionally illiterate adults (age 25 and older) lack a high school diploma or GED, another prerequisite for employment success. While these numbers are less severe for the region as a whole, the region at-large is far from immune to this issue. Within the tricounty region, there are a number of municipalities with illiteracy rates rivaling Detroit: Southfield at 24%, Warren at 17%, Inkster at 34%, Pontiac at 34%.
The report offers suggestions for triage as well as long-term solutions.
[[About half of Detroit can’t read]]
So I’m guessing they aren’t members here at FR then? lol
I grew up in Detroit, and attended Detroit Public Schools and I can red jest fine. (sarc).
You could be right, I don’t know. I always think of the swing voters as the dumbest, because many vote for non-rational reasons as opposed to any type of political philosophy they can explain. One time they might vote for someone because they seem well spoken, another time they vote for someone who is physically attractive or ahead in the polls or whatever. Dem or pub has nothing to do with it for them.

Huh!? Say what!?
“We were promised those Islamic invaders were supposed to be intelligent hard working family oriented members of society.”
They most certainly are intelligent! Why they invented the cell phone bomb and are working hard to institute Sharia Law nation-wide, while marring within their families and getting rid of unwanted females and also ‘modifying’ the remainder below the waist!!
It boils down to discipline in the classroom. The teachers are not allowed to correct or throw out the disruptive students so no one is taught. There are a high percentage of ghetto kids that do want an education.
Tell the kids that they won’t be able to read the contracts when they sign up for the NBA and some crooked manager will steal all their hard working income.
“Detroit teachers surely average $60K/yr ‘
Kalifornicate teachers average 100K and etc etc
Unfortunately you are correct.
When diversity and a firm handshake in a well polished suit beats out brains and intelligence, we’ve arrived at where we are.
My company has been taking it on the chin lately too. Management blames us. LOL!
You’re right about that; I specifically question the smarts of anyone who is undecided days before an election. If you can’t figure it out over the course of a year+, then you probably never will. I still believe they are head and shoulders above the “Obamaphone” lady who had the following analysis of Romney: “He sucks!”
No elaboration on her part; the master told her Romney sucks, and that’s just the final answer. At least a “swing voter” is thinking about SOMETHING.
Fair enough. But at least the Obama phone stiffs are consistent, they will invariably vote dem when they somehow manage to vote.
The swing voters vote one way and then another and usually can’t give a rational reason as to why they do that. It could be because the media said a certain person won a debate, or because a certain person is ahead in the polls or whatever. I suspect there are folks out there who are proud that they always vote for a winner. They have no guiding political philosophy, they could vote for a pub or dem because they really dig red hair or they don’t dig someone’s speaking voice or hate the state the candidate is from.

Me also, but I can’t spill for shet.
I assume “swing voters” are just balancing positions where both parties offer (or threaten) something or other that is dear to them. For example, people who wanted an improved economy under Trump but may have also wanted affirmative action jobs may have been in a real bind recently.
I am mortified by this. How bad could “schooling” BE?
eVIDENTLY far WORSE THAN i COULD IMAGINE.
Those poor people, damned to a substandard existence simply because of their PUBLIC schooling.
DAMN the Austrian system to hell!
I think there are some that can rationally articulate why they might vote for a dem, then a pub, then a dem and so on. I also think many can’t, or their explanation isn’t rational. There is a reason why someone who is adjudged by the media to have won a debate rise in actual polls afterwards. If you have a guiding political philosophy, why would you change your mind based on debate skill?
We haven’t even had 65% eligible voter turnout in presidential since 1908. Off year congessional elections average around 40%, way less for local elections. Most of the time the national popular vote is won by less than 5%. All campaign money is meant to sway the swayable into voting one way or another or even to vote or not vote at all. And supposedly the swayable decide elections.

Better than I would’ve guessed.
