I'm relatively new to "social networks" in the truest sense of the word. My sister raves about Pinterest, and tried to get me interested, but I'm not seeing any usefulness in it. What is it, what does it do, how does it advance my place in the universe, and who cares? It looks like a bunch of pictures to me. Pretty shallow.
I'm thinking it might be useful for widening exposure to some items I'm selling on Etsy, but don't know. Anyone with hands-on knowledge?
I believe it is a substitute for your brain.
“Its for chicks. Dont bother, dude.”........
I’m protesting, I love chickens.

it’s mainly good for sending a fire-hose stream of junk mail. whatever you do, don’t get tricked into signing up for a “free” account.
It’s like those inventor shows on TV, except they skip the you getting the royalty part, and the idea goes straight to some chinese contract manufacturer.
Thank you. I’ll send you the plans for twenty dollars.
Full of dreams and also full of good ideas.
Are you going to redecorate soon? Here are some ideas.
Are you interested in Pazyryk culture? Here are some recent finds from archaeological digs -- in this case, the pictures are the message.
What did San Francisco look like in the 40s? Here's what people drove, wore, lived in, here's where they ate.
Do you love Welsh Corgis? Here are some adorable Corgi pictures, notably Ralph the Corgi, whose young family really knows how to photograph him and write hysterical captions.
Always wanted to go to St. Petersburg to see the fabulous Hermitage Museum? Here's what's inside, without the aggravation and expense of getting there.
I really truly enjoy Pinterest. But then, I am a chick and retired with time on my hands. As many of us here are.
I love Pinterest!
If you have a hobby you can find out more information about that hobby. There are people who post stuff of all different types from art, fashion, cooking, architecture, gardening, camping and survival, cars, trucks, guns, knives, stamps, coins, antiques ... just everything and anything.
Some of my favorite “boards” that people have are ones that show ingenious inventions or ways to solve common problems around the house, garden, camping etc. It is amazing the little tricks or “hacks” you can learn. At the same time it is maddening because a lot of them are so simple it’s like I COULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT!
It’s really not.
Some of the most interesting boards are ones from men who post all kinds of things about survival, camping, weapons, fixing things, inventions, war collections, cars ... stuff like that.
I would say about 30% of it is men and growing.
Oh, wait...
“It is very useful to graphic designers to build mood boards”
Uh, oh. Now do I not only not know what pinterest is good for, now I find out there’s something called a “mood board” that I don’t know about what that is either.
If you’re gathering ideas for a project, say remodeling your house, or you’re a very avid fan or collector, it’s a way to gather all your potential inspirations into a collection in one spot, rather than relying upon favorites/bookmarks in your web browser, or printing them out. I’ve been amused and disturbed by its invasiveness, though. Pinterest emails you suggestions based upon what it perceives as your interests. Depending upon what I’ve searched for and the web sites I’ve visited, the suggestions can be pretty weird. For instance, there were several articles posted here regarding transsexuals and I was looking around for articles discussing the problems that these people had afterwards. Guess what Pinterest sent to me as a suggestion? Trannies. Their algorithm is apparently pretty simplistic.
“For instance, here’s what I made from a bunch of old pallets.”
thanks for your cogent explanation about what pinterest is good for. your explanation is one of the few on this thread that makes total sense.
It is sort of accurate, but there’s a lot more to it than pretty pictures.
I use it for my Etsy shop, and I average about 45-60 hits from Pinterest every month. Do these translate into sales? I have no idea.
Its really easy to use though, and it can’t hurt.
“Would you describe that as post-modern or neo-industrial or upcycled chic? ;-)”
I think it’s the guy version of “shabby chic”.
If you’re a graphic designer with a certain brand for which you need to create a website, it’s common to go looking for imagery, layouts, etcetera that might seem to fit for inspiration. Old school method of doing this is to go through magazines and other printed matter, cut out or copy what you find that works and put it all on a board or boards. Apparel designers and really any sort of visual designers do the same thing. Mood board, trend board, brand image inspiration board.
It’s amazing what people are doing with old campers and motorhomes, I had no idea until an old GMC motorhome landed in my lap very cheaply, I started researching it, Pinterest started sending me suggestions with other peoples’ pinterest pages. Pretty elaborate stuff, not just full restorations but resto-mods like hot rod cars, all the latest tech built into custom retro designs.
Bingo!!
Why use Pinterest when there are internet search engines which give you MORE results?
Because it keeps the ones you really like all in one place.
That sounds far superior to Pinterest, except for the public sharing, which I couldn't care less about.
