“Endeavor to Persevere”, is what the politicians tell We the People year after year. This last year we declared war on them, I hope we picked the correct General.

Open Range was a great movie, along with Broken Trail. The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of the greatest movies of all time, not just a Western, in my opinion. Its about a journey to redemption, a return to peace and civilization after a horrible war, the connections that make us all human and about much needed vengeance. What a great story, with great acting and direction. Haven't seen Open Range, but agree with you on The Outlaw Josey Wales.
Somebody mentioned Pale Rider, which is good, but it is nearly a scene-by-scene remake of Shane.
The underrated The Outlaw Josey Wales will always be one of my favorites of any genre...

There cannot be a 10 greatest, because depending on the last one I watch it surpasses one, some or all.

If the general we chosen fails, we may never get another chance.

I’ll go with Lonesome Dove for my all time favorite, but I love the spaghetti westerns- with the fantastic late, great Ennio Morricone.

Will Penny with Charlton Heston and Joan Hackett is a favorite of mine. Nice characterizations.
My bizarro world persona enjoyed
The Terror of Tiny Town ( a western with midgets) and Zachariah The First Electric Western with Don Johnson

Lots of good movies here. Several have mentioned Blazing Saddles, so I'll add Destry Rides Again, which is Blazing Saddles without the warped genius of Mel Brooks.

“Paint Your Wagon” is an underrated western. The cinematography coupled with costuming and set authenticity set it ahead of other westerns of its time. The scene where the stagecoach full of whores is driven into camp is spectacular.
It also captures the ‘take life as it comes’ and boastfullness of the mining camps that Mark Twain wrote about. Besides Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood singing and dancing, what’s not to like?

Pale Rider is the same story as Shane.

I saw “Unforgiven” with Lancaster and Hepburn recently. My jaw dropped at the language and the kissing scene between Lancaster and Hepburn. I told some friends about it and I said I couldn’t believe that made that movie. I’ll watch it again when it comes on though. LOL!!!

As a period piece, it also does a great job capturing the civil war. Aside from clint’s and Turco’s guns, which were converted 1861 percussions, (not authentic for the time), the cannons, weaponry and costumes were highly authentic and well done.

I saw both versions. One with James Stewart, and one with Audie Murphy. I liked them both.

Another one that got lost along the way was, “Little Big Man”. It was sort of the western front runner to Forrest Gump.
