Royal Caribbeans newest vessel - Symphony of the Seas - will be the worlds largest cruise ship when it is delivered in April 2018, the cruise line confirmed today.
At 1,188 feet long and 215 feet wide, the new 16-deck ship will weigh 230,000 GT (gross tonnage), nearly 3,000 more than the current record holder, another Royal Caribbean ship, Harmony of the Seas.

Let's start a new meme that these super-sized cruise ships will displace so much water that they are more of a threat to flooding coastal cities than global warming!!!
They might actually cause Guam to tip over!
Think anyone will buy it?

Ahhhh....The Falkland Islands cruise.
The Royal Navy had one of those.
I think it was an adventure cruise.
Yeah, we went on a large cruise ship as part of a family event about a dozen years ago. No. Thanks. Not my cup of tea.
We honeymooned in 1983 on a former passenger liner (Kerry Castle) that was already 30 years old (scrapped in 2001). At least it felt like we were on a real ship. Food was excellent in two sittings; it was a low key & low pressure voyage.
No sealed system floating behemoths for us.
Yes, and they still have land mines all over the place. A local said the UN sent them a bunch of money to clear them, but they used it to buy power generating windmills instead. He said they teach their kids in school how to avoid the mines, so it wasn’t necessary to clear them. He said every now and then a cow gets blown up, but that’s no big deal.
Well, that about sums up the "Liberty Call" experience on a carrier!
I see people want to do that all the time but the reality is so far from the dream. The sucking sound is thousands of dollars leaving your bank account. Remember the helicopter landing on the Helipad to get the body of the old man or woman that croked on the cruise. Happens every time. What a bummer that was. And the Tips!! I shutter to recall. I think I would go if you paid me $8000.
Makes for a cheap dinner.
“Waiter, what’s your special tonight?”
“Blown up cow.”
How stable are these ships? I look at their elevated superstructure and wonder.
What talent you have. That is outstanding work in just a few minutes. Amazing and so funny. “ PUKE DAY”. It happens every cruise.
You got ew out of that article? I got the stat that a high school b ball player has a better change of getting into the NBA than a passenger does of getting the Norovirus on a cruise.
How was there nothing to do?
With that many people and activities there must always be something to do. You stayed in your room and watched Fox News?? What kind of cruise was it and what is your age range?
Probably just as good as any other British food on the island. All I had while on shore was beer... which was fine, even if it was a little on the warm side.
Wash your hands every hour or so. There are bathrooms everywhere. Be compulsive, obsessive about washing your hands. Just do it. In ten months, I never got sick. Virtually EVERY other person (in the crew) got sick sometime.
"Here...let me hold your hair..."
People are crazy. I went on one years ago, and they had a scavenger hunt.
“First person up here with full dentures gets 100 points!” People spitting their dentures into their hands and running up holding them in the air above their heads!
They actually process their sewage...the modern cruise ships are quite amazing with the infrastructure, power, water, sewage, etc;
I will say this: Without trying to sound like I’m touting the idea of a cruise, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people go on them with no problems. I think they are a good vacation value, but they are such a value for folks who like having everything done for them. IF you are the type who likes to visit museums and local things or take day trips, the costs mount as you have to buy those things and you’re quite limited if you have a 5-hour port stay. And, by the way, if you’re late to the ship, they will NOT wait for you; so you really have to go the cruise-line sponsored day trips where they know that 33 people are late, all on the same bus. THEN they will wait.
For the Caribbean, they are pretty good, because if you are food-sensitive, you can control what you eat by eating on the ship.
Ultimately, my admonition about washing your hands is like having a guard on a power saw. You have the guard in place even if you’ve used the saw for 30 years because the one time you get complacent.....
