Study: Young men don’t want to get married, new research says they should

SALT LAKE CITY — New research debunking the “ball and chain” myth of marriage for men was released Tuesday.

According to a research brief published by the Institute of Family Studies, the idea that marriage creates more unhappiness than happiness for men just isn’t true.

Nicholas H. Wolfinger, a researcher at the University of Utah, and W. Bradford Wilcox, a researcher at the University of Virginia, say that more education is needed in order to ensure that people understand marriage and the truth behind it.

“Contrary to the notion that marriage is detrimental to men, it turns out that the benefits are substantial by every conceivable measure, including greater financial well-being, higher quality of sexual life, and significantly better physical and mental health outcomes,” wrote Wilcox and Wolfinger in “Men & Marriage: Debunking the Ball and Chain Myth.”

Married men, the research argued, are often less depressed than their bachelor counterparts.

“Marriage is broadly beneficial to men and women alike, and many of these benefits appear to be causal,” Wolfinger said. “In other words, they’re a direct benefit of marriage itself, and not simply a benefit of the fact that happier, healthier, and wealthier men are more likely to get married in the first place.”

According to Pew Research, men are more likely than women to never have been married, but marriage for both men and women have been in a steady decline since 1960.

“Risks of divorce and her cheating is too high unless you can find a near virgin.”

Marry a young woman, get her pregnant, and she’s going to commit to the marriage. It’s worked that way for eons and only when we started using birth control did things change.

The way we have our marriage relationships these days is not natural and we’re paying a price for it.

I married at eighteen to an older man with the understanding from the outset that children were not optional for me. If I didn’t want children then I didn’t have to get married to him.

My seventh baby is due in June. (-:

Here’s the funny thing: The “ball and chain” IS NOT A BAD THING. It’s to men what an anchor is to a ship and woe to the culture that not only doesn’t push men toward it, but actively sabotages this ‘anchor’.

I’m not sure your analogy fits. Boat anchors aren’t prone to attacking and sinking the boat they are attached to. That’s how I see it in the era of no fault divorce and a hostile family court. One that is heavily skewed to automagically believe the woman at the man’s expense.

As another man has commented, we are not psychic. We can’t know which women are the real gems and which ones are fake. The best we can do is try to stack the odds in our favor. My reading on divorce is that 2/3 are initiated by women. And of those, most of the husbands are blindsided by it. Some of the husbands were blindsided due to their own negligence sure. But nonetheless all these men would be better off single than suffer the emotional loss, financial loss and enduring the nightmare of part-time dad that a bad marriage gives you.

IMHO divorce would cease to be an issue for men if women just did 2 things. 1) Be loyal. Don’t cheat and/or don’t divorce because your feelings say you’d be happier single/with another man. 2) Genuinely be nice to their husbands. My observation is many, if not most men really aren’t kind to their husbands.

Making an effort to look attractive wouldn’t hurt either. What’s with all the women chopping off their hair and dressing so terrible compared to when they were dating?
