Skip Salesforce unless you have VERY DEEP pockets. I tried and dumped about a dozen different ones for my company over the past 5 years, settled, painfully, on creating our own from scratch. The nature of our business didn't fit the out-of-the-box schemas of the available CRM. That said, what is the nature of your business/industry, I might be able to make some suggestions.

Agree with SalesForce. One of my clients use it, and it is expensive and hard to use.
We develop custom solutions across a variety of functions - incentives, commissions, salary, performance management, Sales Dashboards. We do this using Excel with VBA. Sophisticated solutions with click of the mouse easy performance. Drop me a MP if you want to discuss solutions.
