A look at President Obama’s final drone kill count, now that his time in office has come to a close

“Turns out I’m really good at killing people,” President Obama reportedly said in 2011. “Didn’t know that was gonna be a strong suit of mine.”

As much as his White House attempted to downplay that aspect of his presidency, it was a strong suit — if that rather glib term can be fairly applied to such a macabre achievement.

Nowhere was Obama’s grim talent so evident as in his drone strike program, and now that his time in office has officially come to a close, we have his final drone kill count. Well, sort of.

By the Obama administration’s own count in its first and only annual report on U.S. strikes “terrorist targets outside areas of active hostilities” in 2016, last year saw 53 strikes killing 431 to 441 combatants and just one innocent.

More broadly, according to data compiled by the Council on Foreign relations, Obama is responsible for about 540 strikes killing about 3,800 people over the course of his entire presidency; roughly 11 times the drone attacks ordered by his predecessor, George W. Bush.

we will never know how many innocent men, women and children died in Obama's CIA directed (and covered up) drone strikes. I think it's safe to say though, there was more than one civilian casualty in 2016.

Obama authorized drone strikes that killed hundreds of women and children over the course of his presidency. As such, the left has no moral high ground to stand upon and lecture us about dead children and suffering families. The pictures of dead children that they're throwing in our faces are casualties of Obama's dirty little war.

It's also worth noting that despite having ordered 11x more drone strikes than George W. Bush, Obama miraculously killed fewer civilians than GW did.

The data is BS. shocking.

Point taken.

I’m thinking that the drones are very effective and have become a mainstay in
Our National Defence.
I wish they had been used at Benghazi.
They were threatened at the Bundy Ranch.
Our Warfighters definitely like them!

3800 kills with 540 strikes...
7 per Hellfire Missile ...
Kinda pricey.

Maybe President Trump needs to employ those drones. I can think of a couple of really great targets

I think they are mostly effective as a political weapon and, when used as a combined arms/force multiplication tool, they are are useful militarily but when you start trying to use them for tasks beyond that scope, their overall usefulness diminishes.

I for one cannot wait until the media starts televising flag draped coffins. 8 years without any is long enough.

..and focusing on the homeless.

any troops dying in Afghanistan from this point forward will be dying in Obama’s war. He had 2,920 days to win that war and yet he didn’t. despite his many drone strikes.

Don’t disagree but Trump will get “credit” for it.

Believe I recenlty read that three times as many have died in Afghanistan during Obozo's ware than under Bush.

Be fascinating to see a study how much Bozo's muzz protecting ROE had to do with the high KIA count. We all know he valued the muzz lives over our GIs.

I think it’s more of a testament to the effectiveness of drone strikes than anything. They don’t seem to win wars, they just seem to prolong them when they’re not used in conjunction with boots on the ground and a combined arms offensive. They gave Obama the ability to say “look, I’m doing something” when, in reality, he’s just putting off the real work for those who will come after him. That’s why I think that his drone strikes were more of a political strategy than a military strategy. That’s not to say that drones don’t have their place but when they’re repeatedly used as a stand alone strategy, they belie a lack of resolve and commitment.
