Book returned to San Francisco library 100 years late

A book of short stories titled “Forty Minutes Late” has been returned to a San Francisco library -- 100 years late.

...

Johnson’s great grandmother had checked it out from the city’s old Fillmore branch in 1917. She passed away a week before the due date, and the Fillmore branch is no longer around.

Johnson found the 1909 book, by F. Hopkinson Smith, in an old steamer trunk in 1996. He assumed the library wouldn’t want it back, but a recently announced “fine forgiveness program” that runs through Feb. 14 inspired him to return it.

Could have been worse. Could have been a retired Harry Callahan.

According to the Worldcat library database, the book is available in some academic libraries. If the San Francisco Public Library returns it to its collection, it will be the only public library west of the Rocky Mountains—and probably in the world—to have it.

If you’re determined to read the book, it is available for free online on the Internet Archive. Project Gutenberg may also have a copy available online for free.

“George Washington’s library book returned, 221 years later” The book ol’ George had checked out in 1789 was “The Law of Nations” by Emer de Vattel. Don’t let anyone tell you the founding fathers didn’t know exactly what they were doing requiring POTUS to be a natural born citizen.

How could he rest of them know with George hogging the book for 221 years?
