Crud, the US has been doing this for decades on a massive scale.

Welfare programs are not new.

Participants will receive €560 ($587) a month taken from their neighbors at gunpoint by government goons.

Randomly selected my right buttock.

I would wager there are quite a few newly minted “Finns” in that group.

Have to keep the invaders happy or they will hurt somebody.

Those who make more than $587/month use the extra money to buy online stuff from out of the country. Those who make less, will work less and be happy with the make-up income, until they get fired for not working enough to be of any value to an employer.

The article does not make it clear whether this income is a replacement for all other government-supplied benefits of any kind. The theory of the guaranteed basic income is that it would replace all other programs (and all the employees that administer them.) However, unless there are no other government programs, no matter how bad the individual outcomes are, then all you’d get is an extra handout on top of the mess that’s already there.

Hell. Why not give every citizen a guaranteed income of $60,000 or $70,000 per year. Then no one would have to work!!!

Another idea I have seen overseas is this: money deducted from your paycheck for unemployment “insurance” is logged against your name. When and if you lose your job, the entire amount is given you on your last day at work.

You don’t “apply” for unemployment, you don’t have to justify yourself to anyone to get it. Its yours. If you find another job right away, good for you, use it to buy a car or a down payment on a house. If you need money to relocate to another job, there you go. If you want to blow it on liquor and video games instead of finding work, you’re a big boy, its your money.

I’m pretty sure USA gives about $2000 a month to about 20 million recipients.

Then $587 a month will quickly become equivalent to zero, causing the Finns to raise the number to $1500, which will soon become equivalent to zero, causing the Finns to ......

[repeat indefinitely]

It’s probably better than what we have. They get this regardless of other income; in our system, if you have other income, you lose your government check. Most people in that situation are not looking at full-time job opportunities, so allowing people to supplement with temporary, part-time, piece work might actually encourage more work. We also spend a hell of lot of money administering our welfare system; I’ve read that if you just cut everyone a basic standard check, and eliminated all the bureaucratic crap that currently goes into allegedly helping the poor. the check would be pretty large and still revenue neutral to the government.

Well, this could be interesting, it would be good to keep an eye on it. Finland is an interesting country. It’s cold, the people are very industrious, the education system (which doesn’t exactly follow the instructions of the U.S. educational establishment) is rated #1 in the world. It has a small population with few minority groups. The stated goal of this program is actually to simplify welfare. Definitely, the Finns should not follow the example of their Swedish neighbors by taking in hordes of Middle East Muslims, that would wreck any program like this. Hopefully, the Finns will continue to protect their sovereignty, as they did during WWII when they had to fight the Russians in two wars and the Germans in one war. Go Finns!

This is a good idea, IF IT REPLACES the current system. If it is just added on, it doesn’t fix anything.
