20 years without speaking. 18 y/o child. I guess speaking isn’t necessary if they still show affection in other ways.

Old joke: Couple didn’t speak for 30 years. One morning, the husband said “The oatmeal’s too hot.” The wife nearly fainted! She said, “You don’t talk for 30 years, and THIS is what you say to me??” He replied, “Well, for 30 years everything’s been good.”

In order for the silent treatment to work, it actually has to be considered punishment by the other person. I always looked upon it as a nice break.

Maybe because the wife slept with another man and had the child he’s forced to raise

Might have known it wasn’t the woman who was silent
for twenty years.

MIght be like my sister who can’t be silent for five

As a kid, I remember my parents going to a 50th anniversary celebration. Before they left my Mom and Dad talked about what is was going to be like because this couple had not spoken in many years. He received the guests in one room and she received in another room. Their children hosted. Rural Iowa in the 50’s where divorce simple did not happen.

A man was leaving a convenience store with his morning coffee when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 Feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary man walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking single file.

The man couldn’t stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the man walking the dog and said: “I am so sorry for your loss, this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I’ve never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?” “My wife’s.” ‘’What happened to her?” “She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her.

“He inquired further, “But who is in the second hearse?” The man answered, “My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife when the dog turned on her.”
A very poignant and touching moment of brotherhood and silence passed between the two men.

“Can I borrow the dog?” the man replied, “Get in line.”

My uncle didn’t speak to my aunt for longer than that.

He didn’t want to interrupt her.

Sounds like the book “Apple in the Attic”, by Mildred Jordan. It’s about a man who would not talk to his wife for their whole life. I haven’t read it for fifty years or so, but I think it was after he thought she tried to abort their child. It was a good read, as I remember it.
