They can if it’s a push button start and the key fob is close by.
Cars today have these fancy start systems - the keys just have to be in the car to hit the ignition button, or possibly even when just close to the car! They also won’t let you lock the keys in the car, and will open the car when you get near it.
I am a bit of a luddite - I like a car key that goes into the ignition.
In NYC, it’s a given that the keys stay in a deep pocket while you fill er up.
My 2011 Cadillac doesn’t has a keyless ignition system. If you have the key fob in your pocket the car will sense that and you push the ignition button on the dash and it will start. If you leave it in the car the car honks at you to remind you to take the key fob and then the doors automatically lock. I would think that a 2015 Mercedes would have similar driver convenience systems as well.
