Megachurch pastor says Christianity doesn’t hinge on Jesus’ birth, and a debate rages

The pastor of one of America’s largest megachurches stirred up Christmas controversy after preaching that the story of Jesus’ virgin birth is not crucial to the Christian faith.

“If somebody can predict their own death and resurrection, I’m not all that concerned about how they got into the world,” Andy Stanley said in a Dec. 4 sermon at North Point Community Church, which draws 36,000 attendees across six locations in suburban Atlanta. “Christianity doesn’t hinge on the truth or even the stories around the birth of Jesus. It hinges on the resurrection of Jesus.”

He is still careless.

If one person inly attends one of his sermons that person will walk away having heard heresy.

If I’m not mistaken his dad is the wonderful Charles Stanley. They’ve had their differences.

His PR team will probably get him to walk it back if the story develops legs and makes it into the new year.

Our small group did a couple of Andy Stanley studies. It was all I could do to sit through them and keep my comments to myself. I thought he was an attention seeker. He tried to be so funny and cool - like a stand-up routine. I don’t care for him, at all.

Wasn’t he in the news a few months ago for another odd statement? I seem to recall something....like referring to the Bible all the time is counter productive, or something like that.

Technically Andy is correct, but he could have said it more effectively.

Daddy Charles is going to rain fire and brimstone down onto Son Andy.

I believe he’s “asking” who raised Lazarus, and of course the answer is Jesus. We make a distinction between those Jesus “raised” - the synagogue leader’s daughter, the son of the widow of Nain, and Lazarus - and Jesus’s “Resurrection.” For one thing, the first three resumed their normal, mortal lives. Jesus was Resurrected as an immortal.

It seems like you’re missing large parts of God’s breathed-out Word.

Matthew 26:56
“But this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.”

The circumstances of Jesus' birth is God fulfilling his promise made in Genesis 3:15

"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

Which makes the story of Christmas VERY important

You are asking who raised Jesus?

Nooooo....

Try very hard to follow this:

You said: "Lazarus was resurrected from the dead in front of hundreds on witnesses."

I replied: "Who raised him?".

Note that 'him' is not capitalized, and set down the eggnog, and see if you can string your original statement and my directly related question into a coherent whole.

That’s what I think is going on. He’s trying to make his mark. I like his dad, but the younger Stanley is performance, showmanship, etc.
