Remember all the snarky comments about how JFK made a fool of himself when he told millions of Germans Ich bin ein Berliner back in 1963?
(Excerpt) Read more at dw.com ...
Heh.
helicopter in that picture was owned and operated by the CIA.... The CIA Pilots went places the Army, Air Force and Marines were NOT allowed to go. Many heard of crap happening and went in to help evacuate. No medals for them They were never there.
NYT on the subject, from 1988...

“I speak German, by the way”
==
And you’re better at it than Germans. Cool, more power to ya.
“NYT on the subject”
==
Oy, the NYT.
What they did not know, but could easily have found out, was that such citizens never refer to themselves as ''Berliners.''
The picture in the story puts the lie to that statement.
"Ich bin ein hasenpfeffer."
I thought it interesting that the left’s rag of record nailed JFK for the use of the article.
Pic? Which pic? My link has no pic, jelly-filled or otherwise.
It was a well-spread urban legend - outside of Germany.
Yes, the documentary talked about that. The Air America personnel who were lost as casualties do not have their names listed on the Vietnam Memorial.
They are listed on a memorial at CIA headquarters, however.
Very sad, and poignant. If you haven't watched the documentary, it might be worth your time.
Of course, if you were there, you don't need to see it, obviously. But I found it very moving, and it made me proud.
“I speak German, by the way, spend a summer session in Trier.”
That sounds very.. progressive.

That was Weiner.
And if you mean the pic at the top of the thread, FWIW, I don’t think that’s necessarily indicative. Language changes. Better standard: what was proper grammar 50 years ago: with the article or without?
I had to ask the mods to remove it because it came from Getty Images. They're a source we can't use on FR.
I'm sorry everyone.
Just click on this link and you can see it.
Sorry, GSC, that reply was meant for ST.
No prob :)
2 issues: Was the use of the article 50 yrs ago proper grammar or not? And if not, shouldn’t JFK’s speechwriters and/or the striped pants brigade (diplomats) have caught it?
