It was more of a service
EDS is a enterprise data company, like what IBM and HP do. That ad was to target everyday Americans to sign up for data centers. It was just to remind the few decisions makers out there, that, “Hey, Where EDS, and we just bought this super bowl ad because we to remind you that we exist” type ad.
Making it funny was a smart move. Most of IBMs and HPs are easy to forget. I still have people who will bring this Ad up once in while that are in the business. It is a legend, it did what it needed to do.

HP bought EDS and then HP split and the EDS portion is now HPE, soon to merge with CSC and come up with a new name in March 2017.
