When she's with the music, she's got it!
A truly motivational story.
A young California woman has fulfilled her dream of becoming Americas first ever Zumba instructor with Down syndrome.
The inspirational 24-year-old from San Francisco became an official Zumba teacher in March of 2012, after memorising and practising the routines for six hours a day.
Yulissa Arescurenaga took part in her first class in 2008, and was immediately besotted by the way the joyful routines and Latin music made her feel.

I've had these students before. They are sweet as pie.
However, without "helper" they are eventually lost.
I wonder who gave her the idea and good for that person and for her.
An amazing young woman.
There are no limits to what anyone can do. That is a wonderful story.
Wrong. Dangerously so.
We ALL have physical and intellectual limits on what we can do. Most of us can do more than we sometimes think we can do, but the limits are still there. Denying them is denying reality.
People with downs have a wide rage of intelligence just like people with out it. There are the totally helpless to the ones who are smart.
With out knowing the woman I can’t say she can’t drive but I’m sure she knows where she is. She seems bright enough to learn dance steps which trust me from someone who’s studied Ballet that is not easy. She did put in 6 hours a day and even though she’s not Prima Ballerina material 6 hours is dedication.
From reading the article she got the idea herself. She liked to dance. Most Downs people I’ve been around like to move about a lot. This is the perfect job for her, I just hope her heart benefits from it. Most downs people don’t have good hearts (physically) and end up dying of cardio problems.
I had four "disabled" students one semester. The person (man) with the most intelligence was the Downs Syndrome person. The other three had no business being there. They did nothing. They sat there and drooled, not paying attention to anyone or anything.
The "helper" of the four just wanted to DUMP her DSPS students there and go off for a free hour of coffee. I told her that she had to STAY with them during class or they had to leave. It had to be that way. I had to deal with the other 45 students and couldn't spend EVERY second dealing with the DSPS people. They needed CONSTANT and CONTINUAL help.
She did NOT want to do that so she took all four students away.
Word "got out" with the disabled helpers and none ever showed up again. The school closed the program not long after that. Those folks were way over their heads. I was at a college.
As DIRTY HARRY once said: "A man has GOT to know his limitations." The mentally disabled have a problem with that.
I have a close friend who had these students in a swimming class. Disaster. Poopie pants in the pool.
This woman in the article made the news BECAUSE she is disabled and appears to have conquered it. Not so.
“Wrong. Dangerously so.”
Right. I’m sick of these public school teachers promoting fantasy. All this “if you really believe” BS.
I told one it was BS and if she really, really, really, really believed she could do anything like fly, I invited her to get on the roof, flap her arms and soar to the sky.
Never took me up on it. But if you really, really, really believe—you can do anything.
BS = bullshit
MS = more shit
PhD = pile higher and deeper
Well there is no denying you are an A*hole.
You have no idea the struggles these people have to do even the slightest task sometimes, they work 10 times harder than you for something as simple as tying their shoes. Your ignorance has blinded you of the beauty and what these people have to offer. You work environment failed to help those who needed it the most and you somehow manage to blame the mentally handicap, now that is pathetic.
Thank your for proving my point. You've demonstrated the limits on your own intellectual capabilities.
Thank you again. You provide yet another demonstration of my point.
You are correct that we all have physical and intellectual limits. It appears that teaching a dance-exercise class is within this young woman’s capacity, which is very nice for her and others.
I’d be the first to admit I’m hopelessly ‘unhip’ but... could someone please tell me what the heck is ‘Zumba’???
It's one of those robot vacuum cleaners that clean your house and terrorize your pets when you are away.
Zumba is a dance-exercise style that uses Latin American music and dance styles. It is like the “aerobic dance” of the 80s, but more up-to-date.
I thought Zumba had come and gone - almost ten years ago our older girl was taking it.
No, it’s still a thing. Several of my old ladies take it at the Senior Citizens’ Center.
