Garment care is a whole new world with quality front-loading washers. Use color-specific detergent for dark colors and wash for the least amount of time, in the coolest temperature...that still gets the job done. Then hang-dry most clothes. It is shocking how long things can last.

exactly like you....cold water, some detergent but not as much as they recommend, hang dry as possible and if you must use the dryer, pull things out to air dry if you can....
hanging clothes outside makes then smell so clean and healthy.....
