“Maybe for nobles, but not for serfs. Serfs farmed the noble’s land, but had no ownership rights.”

No actually serfs farmed their lord’s land in exchange for protection and farmed land granted to them for their own food. In socialism no person owns land nor does anyone have any legacy rights to land.

“Other than land and gold, there wasn’t much private property worth owning back then.”

Except flocks, herds, rights over rivers and ponds, trading rights, mills, farm equipment, weapons, etc.

The medieval economy was far more sophisticated and diversified than many people think. You might want to read Christopher Dyer’s Making a Living in the Middle Ages: The People of Britain 850-1520.

Good point. Unfortunately, I barely have time to read all the stuff I actually need to read.

Could free up some time by staying off FR, but then......I’d miss out on all the good discussion.
