I often re-watch a series before the new one is released.

I have done the same.

When 24 was on, I would DVR it. Just before the next new episode aired, I would re-watch the previous week's episode. It helped.

I also have TiVo which can cut most commercials out of most programs during playback. It is surprising how much more interesting even TV series and movies are by skipping over those 3-8 minute commercial breaks every 4-6 minutes.

I re-watch the previous season as well. It brings me up to speed, plus I always miss something the first go around.
