With temperatures hovering around zero across Maine on Friday, people in Somerset County checking on propane prices may have been greeted with a political message from one dealer.
If you voted for Donald Trump for president, I will no longer be delivering your gas,” says a voicemail message at Turner LP Gas in Skowhegan. “Please find someone else.”
The company is owned by Michael Turner, who didn’t immediately respond to a message on Friday. But he could be turning away a lot of business, given that the Republican president-elect won Somerset County with 58 percent of votes.
Some cases like this have already garnered national attention after Trump’s win over Democrat Hillary Clinton, including a New Mexico marketing firm that refused to do business with Trump supporters.
We don’t know Turner, so we can’t say whether this is a joke.
The Maine Human Rights Act only bans discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry or national origin. Some places have added political beliefs to these kinds of protections, with Washington, D.C., shielding “political affiliation” and Seattle adding “political ideology.”
So it may not be good public relations, but Turner’s move is legal.
That’s great! - now all the Trump voters know who to not do business with.
If I was a competitor I’d run to the nearest newspaper and announce that I welcome business from the Trump voters.
That is why free enterprise is wonderful, someone will take his place.

How is this legal? He is declaring his policy is to discriminate against certain people because he disagrees with them. How does this differ from refusing to bake a wedding cake?

In the State of Maine, a baker can refuse to bake a cake for a gay wedding and a propane dealer can refuse to service Trump supporters.
There is no conflict.

I live in a rural area. There are four competing propane dealers here. If one of them said no business for Trump voters there would be three.
I live in Maine and use both propane and oil, but I don’t live in western Maine.
I never heard of this moonbat’s company. Somerset County is in western Maine, in the Second Congressional district, which was carried by Trump. I’m in Eastern Maine, also in CD 2.
I hope this loon goes out of business. There’s competition in the propane business here.

The appropriate response is to have him fill your 300 gallon tank and then show him your Trump signs.

Took 28 posts before someone said it. It was the first thing I thought when I read the headline.
Well perhaps he’ll get a message from HIS supplier that since he voted for Hillary, he’s being crossed off HIS list.
If his doctor is one of those customers he’d better stock up on aspirin and bandages.
