Reads to me that he won’t give up the family’s name - likely S they need their privacy. Can’t fault him for that. At this point they can’t disprove it - they just can’t confirm it. Headline is overly aggressive in stating that it’s unraveling just because it can’t be second sourced.

I have only one question - who contacted the reporter first? If it was ‘Santa’ then find the nurse, if not then who was it

With all the medical privacy laws now, nurses cannot confirm or deny anything about a patient without family (the person/s considered medical guardian) consent. If it is true and the family does not come forward to defend Santa or give their permission for medical people to make a statement then it cannot be proven.
