An uncommon drug caused a "zombie" outbreak in a New York City neighborhood this past summer, and now a new report identifies the exact compound that the affected people took. The report also shows scientists how they could identify other such drugs in the future.
The mass intoxication was caused by a type of synthetic marijuana, The New York Times reported at the time. The new report specifically identifies the chemical in the drug product as "AMB-FUBINACA," and also highlights some of the unique difficulties that arise in the study of synthetic drugs.
It's not entirely clear why the drug, which was sold under the name "AK-47 24 Karat Gold," causes "zombie-like" symptoms, such as a slow response time to questions, and blank stares, said study senior author Roy Gerona, a clinical chemist at the University of California, San Francisco.
Indeed, these "zombie" symptoms are "a little uncommon" for people who take synthetic marijuana, Gerona told Live Science. Typically, the synthetic marijuana compounds found in these "mass intoxications" have more severe effects on people's health, including seizures and kidney damage, he said. But in this case, the only effect observed was the depressant, or "zombie-like," effect, he said.

Zombies are only zombies if they try to eat other people. These people did not turn and attack others. They were not zombies. If they were zombies, I could get away with killing endless numbers of homeless people, saying that I was mistaken after watching one of those zombie TV shows. This is not the case, and I have checked with my local police officers. Killing zombies is not allowed. Unless they are really zombies.

Apparently only Zombies work at Live Science.

Interesting question for you:
Do “real” zombies carry a zombie I.D. card, perhaps a Grade 1, 2, 3, etc. ?
You mean, like the zombies that determined the elections of 2008 & 2012?!?!?!
It’s tattooed on the back of their neck...
Or they are just democrats.

I thought that was just getting "high" on bad bath salts?
There’s no such thing as “synthetic marijuana”.
You really need to read John Ringo's Black Tide Rising series -- According to some on the democrat side of the aisle, zombies have civil rights even when they are trying to eat you.
***Zombies are only zombies if they try to eat other people.***
Post 1968 zombies only. The earlier ones were different, raised from the “dead” to become slave workers in sugar mills and do the bidding of their “master”.
“Like Democrats!”-Bob Hope
Took a whole seminar on it. Yes, it exists, and is basically, molecularly similar in all respects to THC with a tiny tweak.
You can order up an 80 gal drum of it from Chinese manfs. And then mix/spray/sprinkle it with dried grass varieties and smoke it. Good times.
I have sat up all night in the ER with two different parolees who took different recipes. They were both institutionalized (GA1013). One of them actually recovered which was great bc I got to send him back to prison on new burglary charges. (He stole to pawn to get money for weed)
“Victimless crime.”
I’m almost afraid to ask, but what is a Grade 1, 2, or 3 zombie? Has one of the zombie shows ventured into zombie hierarchy theories? That’s heresy.
“.......what is a Grade 1, 2, or 3 zombie?”........
I have no idea myself but like “zombie”, that too is made up in someone’s mind. The statement was made in jest.
The question occurred to me because tv and the movies have somehow managed to transform vampires and werewolves into sympathetic characters and (sometimes) romantic leads. At the rate we’re going, it won’t be long before tv is giving us romantic zombies.
