Star Trek: Discovery finally has its star. The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green will headline the first Star Trek series in over a decade for CBS All Access, TVGuide.com has learned. Martin-Green will play a lieutenant commander in the new series hitting CBS' streaming network in May 2017. This is the first time that a Star Trek series won't be anchored by a character playing a captain, but according to Entertainment Weekly, who first reported the news, Martin-Green's character's position as lieutenant will have "caveats."
Casting an African-American female to lead the series was a big priority for the show's original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, who left the show earlier this fall due to his other creative commitments. Sonequa Martin-Green's casting follows the announcement that Rent alum Anthony Rapp will also be playing the openly gay Lt. Stamets, an "astromycologist" and Starfleet Science Officer.

I preferred Poncho.
I hope they rename it Urectum to end those stupid jokes once and for all ;)
Speaking personally, she’s so gorgeous I’d sit there for an hour just watching her read the telephone book.
Amen and nothing irritates me more than Weirdowood shoving homosexual relationships down our throats on every single tv show and movie these days. Enough already; it has gotten on my last nerve!
I’m not familiar with the actress and haven’t paid attention to Star Trek in many years, but it strikes me as odd to build a dramatic series around a junior officer. A sitcom, sure, where the junior can play off the boss for laughs (e.g. MTM and Ed Asner), but in a dramatic series the lead generally has to make consequential decisions, and not just occasionally but in every episode. “Yes, captain,” is going to limit the scope.
As soon as shows start making political correctness their primary agenda the quality goes down hill. I expect the Star Wars movies to end up losing popularity as Disney has made them just another modern space action special effects series, nothing special like they use to be.
Guess I won’t be watching that series. Woopie Goldberg was a sight for sore eyes in the other one.
I’m done watching TV shows with women in men’s roles
the real actress doesn’t have dreadlocks, that’s a wig she wears for the walking dead :)
Who had Sosa in the Walking Dead death pool?
Didn’t she die? That was GR’s wife.
I think they should go all in and retitle this show “The Obama Administration in Space”.
I predict that this will fare no better than Star Trek Voyager. Black and female. Is she also ghey? Is the name of their ship, “Agenda”?
I'm guessing you've probably already read it, but if not you should take a look at "Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas", written by John Scalzi. I think he stole your idea.
WRONG !!! James T. Kirk 1.0 was the best captian
Oh, thank God.
:D
No.
Token.
It's a faggot show.
I don't watch faggot shows.
Dunno. I look at Scott Bakula, he’s likable enough but two things jump out. 1. His face looks too big for his body and it’s distracting. 2. His VERY best acting is that little “Hoooo!” at the end of his Quantum Leap episodes.
Point of interest - they wanted him for the role of Gibbs in the original NCIS. Don’t think the franchise would have lasted with him in the role, he plays touch-feely with his people unlike Mark Harmon.
Yes she did.
