LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California regulators were poised on Wednesday to adopt the nation's first mandatory energy efficiency rules for computers and monitors
- devices that account for 3 percent of home electric bills and 7 percent of commercial power costs in the state.

The state Energy Commission said that when fully implemented, the plan will save consumers $373 million a year and conserve as much electricity annually as it takes to power all San Francisco's homes.

Final approval of the standards, expected at a meeting in Sacramento of the five-member commission, caps a nearly two-year planning process that had input from environmentalists,
industry, scientists and consumer groups

"This is a big deal," said Mark Cooper, a policy analyst for the Consumer Federation of America,
adding that computer ownership per capita in California ranks second in the world behind Sweden.

In California, computers and monitors draw an estimated 5,610 gigawatt-hours of electricity - roughly 3 percent of residential use and 7 percent of commercial use statewide - much of that while the devices sit idle.

The NRDC said the amount of power consumed by computers and monitors will be reduced by about a third once there is a complete turnover in existing stocks of those devices.

Currently, you can override the settings. They want to make them mandatory, and control them.

Thrown into the general fund so the libs can use the savings on social programs. What a scam.

Yep
Intel has been working on lower power solutions since the 90’s
One of the side benefits to “Core” technology is non-used cores power down.

Works in everything from server farms to laptops

I suspect the calories needed to work an abacus dwarfs the energy expended by a computer to perform the same calculation.

It is all about government control.

For as long as I can remember they’ve done this and everyone changed products to their rules effectively extending the rule well past their borders. The commercial world needs to tell them no. Knuckle ng under only encourages them.

Server farms will rapidly depart California. The internet is fast enough and data throughout has become cheap enough to make the server farm’s physical location irrelevant.

Films are being routinely made in Canada and in Chicago. Computer firms can locate anywhere. It will become even more saddled with homeless dependent of the welfare state and illegal immigrants with no growth. The cessation movement of north vs south CA will pick up more speed.

And we got a front row seat!!

“Sorry silicon valley. No more server farms for you!”

Not a lot of server farms are on site at companies anymore, either at a CoLo or AWS or something similar.

That said I’ve two racks at home - one with 8 racked servers and the other with 4. My energy consumption is not that great.

Ingtar:" Currently, you can override the settings.
They want to make them mandatory, and control them."

Then they impose a 'smart meter' on your electric power consumtion
Currently, they call it "control over the masses".
Venezulia coming to a neighborhood near you; they will tell you when you can run your washer
and forget about operating a dryer !.. everything 'air dried'.

The next thing is they will request infrastructure improvements like more bicycle lanes.
Pretty soon we will look like Viet Nam of the 1980's.
