On Dec. 4, the New York Giants got ahold of a couple of Pittsburgh Steeler footballs and decided to see if they were below the NFL pregame inflation minimum of 12.5 pounds per square inch.
The PSIs were a little low, Giants coach Ben McAdoo said.
According to the ProFootballTalk, the balls came in at 11.8 and 11.4 psi. The Giants told the league, although not via a formal complaint, whatever that is. The NFL isnt saying much, but it apparently checked to see if the referees had maintained control of the balls and dismissed the situation quickly.
Why? Because by time the Giants obtained and presumably checked the balls on the sideline, the temperature in Pittsburgh was between 41.0 and 41.2 degrees, according to Weather Undergrounds historical data.
Footballs lose air pressure in cold weather. The numbers were explained away by science, not cheating. This was nothing. Nothing happened, nothing at all.
All footballs were in compliance, the NFL stated after Foxs Jay Glazer reported on the incident.
The situation was properly handled. Good job, NFL.
That means given the chance to do deflate-gate all over again the initial situation with the New England Patriots scandal is nearly identical (even considering whatever happened in the Foxborough bathroom, which well get to below) the NFL chose to do nearly the exact opposite.

Thanks. I’ve seen that video. Excellent grasp of the facts.
There can be up to a 3% change which can be significant with a wet versus a dry football. It makes logical sense because as the leather absorbs water it expands and becomes softer, which allows the volume to increase, which is going to decrease the pressure more.
The Exponent analysis is flawed, and was commissioned with an end result to be achieved. It is in no way independent, apart from the flawed conclusions.
You were the one who initiated the ad hominem attacks. The other poster is spot on there.
I made an observation that Mears reinforced through his comment. (I do think, however, that his action was inadvertent and not intentional.)
Exponent?!?!?
Ooooo...WOW!
Exponent? Ted Wells? A match made in heaven, given that the one is an apparent agent of the Dark Lord, and the other authors hit pieces that would make most any 9th grader blush.
But I know - we have a subject here that doesn’t have much depth, so...
Maybe it’s time we all moved up to the next thread of interest!
CA....
Preferably out of a cannon.
deflate gate was clearly a case of sour grapes and nothing more, get real
“Preferably out of a cannon.”
That’s laced with s**t.
Okay. I will take it that way as well, then.
I think we agree...don’t know what I might have said that indicated otherwise, except maybe taking issue with the “stupid science” put forth by Exponent, the NFL, and some people who post to these threads (said “science” application being about as rigorous as the pro-AGM climate change “science” we see.)
But probably I am taking the bait by even discussing the science, since you are right, it was a vendetta from the get-go.
Deflation deniers. This is settled science. /s
I see the same parallel between the people who support Goodell on this and the Pro-Anthropogenic Global Warming people, for whom it is the following:
A.) An Emotional Issue (facts don’t matter to them and they manufacture the “science”, the same way Exponent was hired to cook up support for Goodell’s case against Brady and the Patriots. When they realized they couldn’t get Belichick, they went full bore for Brady, because this is personal to them.)
B.) A Power Grab (For global governance, revenue generation, and an equalization of opportunity, the same way Goodell wanted to exercise his power to show he had it, and because it is unfair that the Patriots are successful. Need to have parity, and this was just one more tool to hammer an outlier in place.)
C.) A Vendetta (against anyone ruining Gaia by burning gas or eating meat...the same way Goodell had it in for the Patriots)
Deflate gate. Like the eggplant that ate Chicago, it will eat your city soon.
How can a multi multi billion $ business like the NFL not figure out how to provide footballs that are regulation?
How do we get MIT scientists involved?
How do we get into Federal court?
It’s football, for crying out loud.
A game designed to keep coal miners off the streets - I think Artie Donovan said that.
LOL! Exactly...that is what makes it so ridiculous.
Deflategate was the biggest pile of s**t since Spygate. Neither “Gate” made a difference in NEW winning or losing. Both “Gates” were nothing more than the rest of the NFL getting even with NEW.
IF, IF NEW got ANYTHING useful out of Spygate...was Belichick the first (or last) coach to film/tape opposing teams? Nope.
Air pressure? Ok. So why did Brady DO BETTER IN THE SECOND HALF OF THAT COLTS GAME WITH “PROPERLY INFLATED” FOOTBALLS?
The NFL proved >>nothing<<. Anyone with a functioning brain synapse would agree. Jealous turds whose teams suck? Not so much.
“But, but, but Tom Brady DESTROYED HIS IPHONE!” So what? I wouldn’t let anyone look at my phone either.
When garbage like Leonard Little, Ray Lewis and Lawrence Phillips get away with everything including murder with barely a slap on the wrist, but one of the greatest players ever gets a 4 game suspension for...air pressure...there’s big problems with the sport.
Actually, Goodell is the perfect Commissar for the NFL: A s**tbag puppet dancing at the behest of his s**tbag masters.
So, so glad I canceled cable and don’t contribute to this garbage.
Even if he is, which I doubt, he should be fired.
Darn - I thought this would be a chance to illustrate the difference between hanged and hung. But nobody responded. sigh
Hanged has a very specific meaning. It applies to a human suspended by the neck from a tree. He/she is hanged. If it's an object, a non-human, it is hung. A piñata, even if it is in the shape of a human, it is hung.
The ‘wicked witch of the west’ is Pelosi.
The ‘wicked witch of the east’ is Hitlery.
This whole incident is proof that “men” are just as bad at soap opera watching as women.
Shoot, sorry I probably spouted off to the wrong poster....
