New Orleans voters have endorsed Mayor Mitch Landrieu's plan to satisfy decades of owed back pay to city firefighters, many long retired. They approved a new property tax Saturday (Dec. 10) that will generate nearly $9 million annually for the next 12 years to satisfy a $75 million settlement in a long-standing lawsuit between the city and firefighters.
The 2.5-mill tax adds $87.50 to the tax bill of a home valued at $350,000, plus $25 for each additional $100,000 in value. For commercial properties owners, another $35 per $100,000 in value will be collected.
The city has already made a $15 million payment this year toward its back pay debt. Landrieu promised to commit $5 million to the settlement each year if the tax was approved.

How in the world did the city stiff them on pay? Aren’t there union contracts?
Watch out for this crap occurring in your own local governments. The more urban you are the worse this crap will be, because liberals in charge gave away the store and have no hope of covering what is owed. Like every “solution” they will confiscate more money from YOU to give to other groups that funded their campaigns and was a voting bloc for them.
For those people the libs always go to bat for them. Money flowing to them means money flowing to dem campaigns. Campaign promises made to the citizens they represent, hey, those were campaign promises. You can’t expect to hold me to those.
Not pay. Retirement plan/Pension fund matching and such.
In case some are not aware, interest rates on the investments these plans normally invested in, have gone way down. Further liberal creative bookkeeping we’d go to jail if we did, has often shorted these funds as well.
it is coming. Much was promised that cannot be paid without squeezing taxpayers. CALPERS needs $93K from every family in CA in order to pay out what is owed. Dallas Police and Fire is another one. who knows what Chicago & IL need to be solvent. Meanwhile current services will deteriorate as tax bite increases.
Think of all the underfunded pension plans across the nation. I’m not sure if this is the case in New Orleans, but in many cities past leaders made promises to unions for votes in exchange for good government salaries and pensions. They did so by putting the burden on future tax payers. It sounds to me the chickens are starting to come home to roost.
People are going to start finding out they were snookered.
no problems with rank and file police and fire.
the police and fire unions like all of them, are rackets.
“the police and fire unions like all of them, are rackets.”
You have no idea.
I have a cousin who is retired NOFD.
When he was working, he lived large, fishing boats, fishing camp, sports car, big truck, elite private school for the kids.
I would visit the fire house and the food was very great and all those guys had very nice cars and trucks.
As a firefighter, he may have seen two structure fires per yeah, but that’s where the firefighters earn their money.
There is a big reason why when in our area someone calls for an ambulance, they get the ambulance and a couple fire trucks too.
They are almost always available and need the practice. IE there are hardly any fires to go to nowadays.
>Not pay. Retirement plan/Pension fund matching and such.
No. You mean another ‘legalized’ govt Ponzi scheme. The only entity *NOT* at the ‘bargaining table’ is the taxpayers.
And some actually think we have outlawed slavery in this country....
>People are going to start finding out they were snookered.
Snookered? I have yet to see a ‘school’ tax that wasn’t passed; lump in police/fire-fighters and you have a trifecta. The sheep are are stupid as ever.
