Many years ago, a rather ‘large’ young woman, definitely not of above average intelligence, attended the 4th Class Power Engineering Program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) on a government unemployment program. When the instructor was explaining the basics of plumbing, he referred to ‘make’ and ‘female’ fittings. She objected vigorously to the President of the college, claiming that the instructor was ‘sexist’. Her complaint fell on deaf ears and she eventually quit the program. Given that she was failing all other courses in the program, her complaint and her subsequent resignation was not surprising! Now, in this especially PC climate, if that happened today, she would have likely won a lawsuit against SAIT!
